735 of 736 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'Coal mining', column 2: prints 660, the subtotals in columns 3 to 17 add to 661; 'Mining', column 15: prints 4, rows 'Metal mining' to 'Mining and quarrying' add to 5.

Reader’s notes

p. 187. 17 columns. Three heading levels: the top band carries the spanner headings "Unfair labor practice cases" (over All C cases through CP) and "Representation cases" (over All R cases through RD); the stub, "All cases", and the three right-hand headings ("Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases", "Unit clarification cases") are tall boxes repeated down the levels, with the code abbreviations UD, AC, UC printed only on the third level. The crop is the first page of the table: it ends with the "Manufacturing" subtotal rule, and the nonmanufacturing sections plus the footnote texts are on the following page. Footnote markers 1 (on the caption, which is excluded) and 2 (on the stub heading "Industrial group") are printed here, but no footnote text appears in this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Arithmetic check as a transcription control: every one of the 16 numeric columns sums across the 22 industry rows exactly to the printed "Manufacturing" line, and in every row the C-case components sum to "All C cases", the R-case components to "All R cases", and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC to "All cases". No internal inconsistency was found, so no suspected misprints. Several row labels are hyphenated across printed lines and were rejoined: "mate-rials" (Apparel), "prod-ucts" (Printing, publishing; Stone, clay, glass), "indus-tries" (Petroleum refining; Miscellaneous manufacturing), "ma-chinery" and "equip-ment)" (Fabricated metal products). Faint but legible right-hand cells (UC column) were confirmed by the column total of 135.

p. 188. Grid is 17 columns: stub plus 16 numeric columns, counted from the vertical column rules. No column headings are printed on this crop (it continues a table from the preceding page), so header_rows is empty. The crop is also cut off at the bottom: there is no closing rule under "Legal services", so the table continues on the next image. Row structure: "Mining" and "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" are indented subtotal lines set off by horizontal rules; they are transcribed as ordinary rows. The Construction/Wholesale/Retail/Finance/Postal block and the services block that begins with "Hotels, rooming houses, camps, and other lodging places" have no subtotal line within this crop. Arithmetic cross-checks: all other rows and both subtotals reconcile internally (col 2 = sum of cols 3-9; col 10 = sum of cols 11-13; col 1 = col 2 + col 10 + col 14 + col 15 + col 16), and every column of both subtotal rows equals the sum of its component rows. Two linked exceptions involve the Coal mining row at column 14 (the third-from-last numeric column), which I read as "1": (a) with that 1, the Coal mining row sums to 661 against the printed total of 660; (b) column 14 of the four mining rows sums to 1+1+3+0 = 5 against the printed "Mining" subtotal of 4. Both would reconcile if Coal mining's column-14 value were 0. The glyph renders as a clear "1" at this resolution and is transcribed as printed; a reader should treat that single cell (Coal mining, column 14) as doubtful. "U.S. Postal Service" is rendered in the scan as "U S Postal Service" — the periods are lost at this resolution but the spacing shows them; transcribed with periods. Hyphenated line breaks repaired in the labels: "real es-/tate", "inter-/urban ... transpor-/tation", and "ga-/rages". There is a small stray ink speck in the left margin beside the "Construction" row and another just below the "U.S. Postal Service" row near columns 10-11; neither is a digit or a footnote marker. No footnote markers appear anywhere in this crop.

p. 189. This crop is a continuation page ("—Continued"); the industrial groups preceding "Museums, art galleries, and botanical and zoological gardens" are printed on earlier pages, so the body here begins mid-table. Column headings are printed on this page and are transcribed. Header structure: 17 columns. Level 1 holds the two spanners ("Unfair labor practice cases" over All C/CA/CB/CC/CD/CE/CG/CP; "Representation cases" over All R/RC/RM/RD) plus the tall stub heading, "All cases", and the three tall right-hand headings. Those three right-hand headings have their own third-level boxes carrying the code letters UD, AC and UC; the stub and the other column headings are tall boxes repeated down through level 3. "Total, all industrial groups", All R cases column: printed as "8 078" with no visible digit-grouping comma (the comma appears to have dropped out in printing/scanning); transcribed as 8,078. The column breakdown confirms the value: 5,410 + 764 + 1,904 = 8,078. "Services" and "Public administration" are set off by rules as group-total lines, and "Total, all industrial groups" is the grand total; all are transcribed as ordinary body rows. Every row and column sum in the crop checks out exactly as printed (e.g. 40,634 + 8,078 + 241 + 38 + 445 = 49,436), so no misprints are suspected in the figures. Footnote punctuation is faint in the scan: there may be a period after "terms" in footnote 1 and after "Source" in footnote 2 that did not reproduce; the text is given without inserting characters that are not legible.
