  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U S Department of Commerce

722 of 722 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 316. The table has 17 columns (stub plus 16 numeric). Two spanner headings each cover five columns: "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" over Total / AFL-CIO / Teamsters / Other national unions / Other local unions, and "Valid votes cast for unions" over Total / AFL-CIO unions / Teamsters / Other national unions / Other local unions. The crop is cut off at the bottom: the last printed row visible is Kansas, so the West North Central division subtotal and all remaining divisions/states continue beyond this image. No footnote text is visible in the crop even though the stub heading carries marker 1 ("Division and State 1"); the footnote presumably sits below the cut. Indented rows "New England", "Middle Atlantic" and "East North Central" are division subtotal rows, set off by rules, and are transcribed with their values. Doubtful cells: the North Dakota and South Dakota rows are all zeros, but the printing is light and in the "Valid votes cast for unions — Other national unions" column for those two rows I could not be fully certain whether a 0 is printed or the cell is blank; I transcribed 0 on the assumption the row is uniformly zero-filled like its neighbors. The "AFL-CIO" cell (elections won by unions) in the North Dakota row also carries a small ink artifact next to the 0. Arithmetic cross-checks all succeed as printed: component columns sum to their "Total" columns, union + no-union votes sum to "Total valid votes cast", elections won + elections with no representative sum to "Total elections", and each state group sums to its division subtotal (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central all verified). No misprints detected in the transcribed portion.

p. 317. 17 columns: stub, "Total elections", five columns under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions", three tall single columns, five columns under "Valid votes cast for unions", then two tall single columns. Suspected misprint: the division-total label "West South Central" is printed twice. The first occurrence (row 16) follows Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi, which are the East South Central states; the second occurrence (row 21) follows Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, the actual West South Central states. The first is almost certainly a typesetting error for "East South Central". Both are transcribed exactly as printed. Row 1, "West North Central", is a division total whose member states are printed on the preceding page; this crop is a continuation page, so that row has no states above it here. The crop is cut off at the bottom: a rule and the start of the next section (the Mountain division states) lie below the image edge, and the table continues. Any footnotes, including the text of footnote 1 attached to the stub heading "Division and State", are not printed on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. The scan renders dotless "i" in several labels (e.g. "Virginia", "Mississippi", "District of Columbia") and in the headings ("unions", "elections"); these are transcribed with normal spelling. All division totals on this page are internally consistent with the sums of their member states, and in every row the union total plus the no-union total equals the total valid votes cast, which supports the digit readings.

p. 318. This crop is a continuation page: no column headings are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 17 columns (stub + 16 numeric columns), counted from the vertical column rules and confirmed on every row. Verification by cross-footing: for all three subtotal rows (Mountain, Pacific, Outlying Areas) each of the 16 columns equals the sum of the member rows above it, and the internal relations col1 = col2 + col7 and col2 = col3 + col4 + col5 + col6 hold on every data row including the final total. No arithmetic discrepancies found, so column alignment is well supported. Doubtful cells: Nevada, 11th numeric column is a lone "1" sitting in a column whose other entries are two- and three-digit; the Mountain subtotal for that column (879) confirms it. Colorado's 12th numeric column is "0" with the "26" falling in the 13th column, again confirmed by the subtotal (219 and 41). A stray dot is printed to the right of the "Virgin Islands" row label (leader-dot artifact); dropped per instructions. In the footnote the abbreviation is printed with faint/absent periods, reading "U S Department of Commerce"; it is transcribed as it appears on the scan. The sentence has no visible terminal period. The footnote marker "1" is raised in the original and refers to a stub heading printed on an earlier page of this table.
