Final Outcome of Representation Elections in Cases Closed, Fiscal Year 1982

p. 304. Structure: 16 columns. Three heading levels. "In units won by" spans only the last three Employees-eligible-to-vote columns (Teamsters / Other national unions / Other local unions); the Employees "AFL-CIO unions" column is set one level higher, level with "Total" and "In elections won", as shown by its heading box depth and by the centring of the "In units won by" rule. This is slightly odd semantically (the AFL-CIO figure is plainly also an "in units won by" figure, e.g. 52,158 + 129,258 = 181,416), so a reader may wish to treat column 11 as a fourth member of that spanner. Decimal points: in the "Percent won" column the scan does not resolve the decimal point; the cells image as "39 0", "100 0", "0 0", etc. They are transcribed with the point restored ("39.0", "100.0", "0.0"). Every one was verified against its own row: 1,150/2,949 = 39.0, 71/80 = 88.8, 18/21 = 85.7, 13/16 = 81.3, 2,064/5,116 = 40.3, and so on for all 17 values, so the placement is certain. Other unresolved punctuation: the period after the section letter "A" and after the "v" in the versus-style row labels is not legible at this resolution. These are transcribed without it ("A All representation elections", "AFL-CIO v AFL-CIO"); the printed original very likely reads "A." and "v.". The AFL-CIO hyphen images as an en dash throughout and is transcribed as a plain hyphen. Empty cells: a great many blank cells carry leader dots or ellipses of varying length ("." , ". .." , "... .") marking not-applicable combinations; all are rendered as "". Apparent anomaly, transcribed as printed: the "National v local" row places its 2 wins and its 10 eligible employees in the Teamsters column rather than in a national or local column. This is not a reading error on my part — the 2-union subtotal requires it (Teamsters wins 20 + 0 + 14 + 2 = 36, matching the printed 36; Teamsters employees 2,216 + 0 + 794 + 10 = 3,020, matching the printed 3,020). It looks like a classification or typesetting slip in the source. Verification: all row and column totals reconcile. Component sums match every printed subtotal ("1-union", "2-union", "3 (or more)-union") and the grand total in all 15 numeric columns; within each row, wins + no-representative = total elections and employees in units won + employees where no representative chosen = total employees. No printed figure appears to be in error apart from the "National v local" column placement noted above. Crop: only part "A All representation elections" is present; any later parts of Table 13 continue beyond this page. Footnote markers 1 (on the caption, which is excluded) and 3 (on "Total elections") are referenced but their texts are not printed within this crop, so "footnotes" is empty.

p. 305. Sixteen columns. The "Employees eligible to vote" spanner covers six columns: Total, In elections won, and a second-level spanner "In units won by" over AFL-CIO unions, Teamsters, Other national unions, Other local unions. This grouping is confirmed arithmetically: on the Total RC elections row 51,332 + 11,853 + 5,854 + 13,190 = 82,229 = "In elections won". Decimal points: in this scan the period glyph is not resolved, so the "Percent won" column prints as "43 5", "100 0", etc. These are one-decimal percentages (992/2,281 = 43.5, 1,808/4,031 = 44.9, and so on for every row), so they are transcribed with the decimal point. For the same reason the section line is transcribed "B. Elections in RC cases" although the period after "B" is not legible in the image. Faint stray dots (leader-dot or speck artifacts, not digits) sit in three otherwise-empty cells and are transcribed as "": "AFL-CIO v national" under Elections won by unions / Teamsters; "AFL-CIO v Teamsters v local" under In units won by / Other national unions; "Local v local v local" under Elections won by unions / AFL-CIO unions. Each is consistent with an empty cell: e.g. 0 + 29 + 0 = 29 on the AFL-CIO v Teamsters v local row. The heading uses capitalized "Other National unions" in the Elections-won section and lowercase "Other national unions" in the Employees section; both are transcribed as printed. "Total elections" carries a raised 2; the caption carries a raised 1. Neither footnote text is printed on this crop (the page shows only the continued part B, and the footnotes evidently appear with part A on the preceding page), so footnotes is empty. Every cross-foot checks: within each row, won + no-representative = total elections, and the four union-type columns sum to "Total won" and to "In elections won"; the 1-union, 2-union, 3 (or more)-union and Total RC elections lines all add correctly from their components. No misprints detected.

p. 306. Continuation page: no column headings are printed on this crop, so header_rows is empty. The grid has a stub plus 15 numeric columns, counted from the column rules; the column assignment was confirmed because every subtotal and total row reconciles with the detail rows above it in all 15 columns (e.g. RM 1-union: 24+14+2+1=41, 41+165=206, 943+438+18+28=1,427, 1,427+10,012=11,439; Total RD: 850+17+2=869, 21,795+248+0=22,043). The two centered section lines "C Elections in RM cases" and "D Elections in RD cases" are transcribed as label-only rows; in the scan no period is visible after the section letters C and D, though one may be present in the original print. The percent column (column 2) is printed with one decimal place but the decimal points did not survive this 1-bit scan, rendering as e.g. "18 3", "100 0"; I have written them as 18.3, 100.0, etc. Each value checks out as the ratio of column 3 to column 1 (24/131=18.3, 49/216=22.7, 12/17=70.6, 207/869=23.8), so the reading is secure. Sentence-final periods in the two footnotes are likewise not resolvable in the scan and were supplied. The RM AFL-CIO row, last column: the leading glyph of the figure is broken in the scan and reads ambiguously, but 9,672 - 943 = 8,729 confirms it as 8,729. Small isolated specks appear in otherwise empty cells (RD "Other national unions" column 4; RD "AFL-CIO v local" columns 5 and 6; and trailing leader dots after several row labels such as RD "Teamsters", "Other local unions", "1-union elections", "AFL-CIO v Teamsters" and "AFL-CIO v AFL-CIO v Teamsters"); these are leader-dot/dirt artifacts, not values, and the corresponding cells are left empty, which the subtotals confirm. The scan frequently renders "i" as a dotless glyph ("ın", "unıt"); normal "i" is transcribed.
