Reader’s notes

p. 285. 17 columns: stub, "All cases", eight unfair-labor-practice columns (All C cases, CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CG, CP), four representation columns (All R cases, RC, RM, RD), and the three single columns UD, AC, UC. The header has three printed levels; the stub, "All cases" and the CA…RD sub-headings occupy boxes that run down to the bottom header rule, so they are repeated in every level, and the "Union deauthorization / Amendment of certification / Unit clarification cases" headings are repeated over their own UD/AC/UC line. The crop is cut off at the bottom: the table continues past the "West North Central" subtotal onto the following page(s), and no footnote text is printed on this image (the caption carries a raised 1 and the stub heading a raised marker, but the note texts are not in the crop). The stub heading's raised marker is small and broken; it reads most plausibly as a raised 2 (transcribed "Division and State^2") but could be a 3. A few row-label areas carry a stray leftover leader dot in the blank space to the right of the label (New England, Ohio, Wisconsin, Kansas); these are typesetting debris, not data, and were dropped. Arithmetic check: every state row sums across to its printed "All cases" value, every component sums to "All C cases"/"All R cases", and each of the four subtotal rows (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) equals the sum of its member states in all 16 numeric columns. No misprints detected.

p. 286. The crop is a continuation page: no column headings of any level are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid is 17 columns (stub + 16 numeric), counted from the column rules and confirmed on every body row. The crop is cut off at both ends of the table. Above "Delaware" the table's earlier rows (the New England and Middle Atlantic blocks and their regional totals) are not shown, and below "Utah" the Mountain block continues (Nevada and the "Mountain" total are below the bottom edge), so the final section here has no total row on this image. The blank bands between blocks are typographic spacing plus double rules, not printed rows, so they are not transcribed. The stub column is unusually wide and there is a wider gutter between the 9th and 10th numeric columns than between any other pair; the file name (p0285 ... p0286) suggests this is a two-page spread stitched into one image, with the seam falling in that gutter. The columns are nonetheless a single continuous panel of 16, and nothing appears lost at the seam. Accuracy check: all three printed regional totals on this image (South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central) reconcile exactly with the sum of their member states in every one of the 16 numeric columns, which independently confirms both the digits and the column each one sits in. No misprints found. One doubtful glyph: the East South Central value in numeric column 6 is preceded by a small ink smudge, making it read like "ι0"; the surrounding digits and the column total (6+3+0+1) confirm it is 10, transcribed as 10. State names carry scanner artifacts on the letter "i" (e.g. "Virginia", "Mississippi", "Wyoming", "Arizona") but the spellings are unambiguous and are given in standard form.

p. 287. This is the final page of a continued table (caption reads "—Continued"), so the body opens mid-list: Nevada is the last State of the Mountain division, whose earlier States appear on the preceding page; the "Mountain" line is that division's subtotal. "Pacific" and "Outlying areas" are likewise subtotal lines, printed indented, and the last line is the grand total. The three right-hand headings are printed broken across lines ("Union deauthor-ization cases", "Amend-ment of certifica-tion cases", "Unit clarifi-cation cases") and have been rejoined; their one-letter codes UD, AC, UC form the third heading level, while the other headings span all three levels. All subtotal and total lines cross-foot and cast exactly as printed, and the row sums (All C + All R + UD + AC + UC = All cases; CA...CP = All C cases) also check out, so no misprint is suspected. In the footnotes the sentence-ending periods and the periods in "U.S." are not visible in this scan (printed as "U S" and with no terminal stops); they have been transcribed as they appear, but they were most likely lost to the scan rather than omitted in the original. A small stray ink speck sits in the stub column of the Nevada row to the right of the label; it is not a footnote marker or punctuation.
