  1. 1 See Glossary for definitions of terms.

719 of 720 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'Miscellaneous manufacturing in', column 3: prints 1,375, columns 4 to 10 add to 1,380; 'Manufacturing', column 10: prints 46, rows 'Food and kindred pro' to 'Miscellaneous manufa' add to 51.

Reader’s notes

p. 282. Crop shows the first page of the table only: it ends with the "Manufacturing" subtotal row under a double rule, and the nonmanufacturing sections plus the footnote texts (markers 1 on the caption and 2 on the stub heading "Industrial group") are on the continuation page and are not printed on this image, so `footnotes` is empty. Column structure: 17 columns. Three heading levels; the third level exists only under the last three columns (UD, AC, UC), so the "All cases", "All C cases"/CA...RD cells were repeated down into it, and the three long right-hand headings were repeated up into level 1. Arithmetic check (transcribed as printed, not corrected): every column and every row cross-foots exactly to the printed "Manufacturing" subtotals EXCEPT column CP. The 22 industry CP values as printed sum to 50 against the printed subtotal of 46, and the last row, "Miscellaneous manufacturing industries", has C subcolumns (891+396+51+19+5+0+18) summing to 1,380 against its printed "All C cases" value of 1,375. The suspect cell is CP for "Miscellaneous manufacturing industries", read as 18 on two passes; a value of 13 there would reconcile that row (and leave the CP column one short of 46). Its "All C cases" figure of 1,375 is corroborated by the All C column total (13,844) and by its All cases row (1,375+334+19+2+19 = 1,749), so the error is confined to CP. All other cells are clean and unambiguous.

p. 283. 17 columns: stub, "All cases", eight unfair-labor-practice columns (All C cases, CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CG, CP), four representation columns (All R cases, RC, RM, RD), then UD, AC, UC. The last three headings ("Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases", "Unit clarification cases") span the top two heading levels, with their letter codes on the third level; the stub heading and "All cases" span all three. This is a continuation page ("—Continued" in the caption) and the crop cuts the table off after "Motion pictures"; no footnote texts appear on this crop, so the markers referenced in the caption (1) and in the stub heading (2) are printed elsewhere. Doubtful cells: in the "U.S. Postal Service" row the UC cell carries a stray ink mark that looks like a "U" to the left of the figure; the printed value is 0, which the row arithmetic confirms (1,320 + 6 + 1 + 0 + 0 = 1,327). The periods in "U.S. Postal Service" are very faint in the scan. A small stray mark also sits beside the RD value 23 in the "Mining" subtotal row, beside the CE value 2 in the "Local and suburban transit..." row, and beside the CC value 2 in the "Motion pictures" row; in each case the figure itself is clear and sums check. No arithmetic was performed on the transcribed values, but as a check every data row's components sum to its "All C cases", "All R cases" and "All cases" entries, and both subtotal rows ("Mining", "Transportation, communication, and other utilities") agree with their member rows in all 16 numeric columns. No misprints found.

p. 284. This crop is the tail of a table continued from the preceding page: no column headings are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 17 columns (stub + 16 data columns); vertical rules group the data columns as 1 | 2-9 | 10-13 | 14 | 15 | 16. The transcription is internally consistent under the table's own arithmetic, which I used as a check on column placement: in every row column 2 equals the sum of columns 3-9, column 10 equals the sum of columns 11-13, and column 1 equals column 2 + column 10 + columns 14 + 15 + 16. All thirteen rows satisfy all three identities as transcribed. The "Services" subtotal row is larger than the sum of the ten service-industry rows printed here (e.g. 8,266 vs 6,228 in column 1); that is expected, since the earlier service industries of the division appear on the preceding page and are not part of this crop. The footnote line at the very bottom is clipped by the crop (only the upper part of the letters is visible) but is legible as "1 See Glossary for definitions of terms."; its marker is a raised 1. There may be further footnotes below the crop edge. The leader dots after "(except motion pictures)" and "Health services" were dropped as instructed.
