  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce

790 of 812 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 226. 17 printed columns. The table is cut off by the crop: the South Atlantic division is incomplete — it ends with South Carolina and its division subtotal line (and any further states) falls on the next page, so unlike the four divisions above it that block has no total row here. Typesetting note: the right-hand block of columns (from "Number of elections in which no representative was chosen" onward) is set roughly half a line lower than the left-hand block, so values appear to hang below their state names. Row assignment was verified arithmetically and is not offset: every row satisfies total elections = elections won by unions + elections with no representative chosen; union "Total" = AFL-CIO + Teamsters + other national + other local (in both the elections block and the votes block); and total valid votes cast = valid votes cast for unions (Total) + total votes for no union. Every column of the four complete divisions also sums exactly to its printed division subtotal. No printed total appears to be in error. The stub heading "Division and State" carries a raised 1; the text of that footnote is not printed on this crop. The two narrow election columns "Other national unions" and "Other local unions" in the South Atlantic block are the least legible cells on the page (single digits in very narrow columns, sitting on the half-line offset). The readings given — Delaware 1/0, Maryland 0/1, District of Columbia 1/2, Virginia 0/2, West Virginia 3/1, North Carolina 0/0, South Carolina 0/1 — are the only assignment consistent with each row's printed "Total" elections won, but that block has no subtotal to confirm the split between the two columns, so the internal division of each row's amount between "other national" and "other local" is the one judgment call here. Leader dots after state names were dropped. "Nebraska" is printed with trailing leader dots only.

p. 227. Continuation page: no column headings are printed on this crop, so header_rows is empty. The grid is the stub plus 16 numeric columns (column rules run: 6 columns, then 1, then 5, then 2, then 1, then 1). The crop begins mid-table: the South Atlantic group's earlier States (Delaware through South Carolina) are on the preceding page, so only Georgia and Florida precede the printed "South Atlantic" subtotal here. Arithmetic check (values transcribed as printed, nothing corrected): every subtotal that has all of its member States on this crop reconciles exactly in all 16 columns — East South Central, West South Central, Mountain, Pacific and Outlying Areas. The South Atlantic subtotal could not be checked because its other States are off-crop. Doubtful cells: in the Wyoming row the entire line is zeros and the last (16th) column's "0" is very faint in the scan — it is read as 0 here; whether it is a printed 0 or a blank cannot be settled from this image (either reading leaves the Mountain subtotal of 773 intact). Stray marks that are specks, not characters, and were not transcribed: a comma-like speck left of "19" in the South Atlantic row (column 3); a speck above column 3 in the East South Central row; an apostrophe-like speck in the stub just above "West South Central"; a hand-drawn squiggle in the stub beside the Virgin Islands row; a small dot left of the "0" in the Outlying Areas row (last column). Right edge: a few faint fragments sit outside the table's right-hand rule (beside the Colorado row and near the bottom rows). They fall outside the table body and appear to be page-edge bleed or marginalia, not a cut-off 17th column. The scan is 1-bit and drops small dots throughout (State names print without the dots on their i's, e.g. "Mississippi", "Louisiana", "Hawaii"); spellings are given normally. On the same basis the footnote's "U S" is given as "U.S."; no periods are visible in the scan there or at the end of the footnote sentence.
