39 of 40 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'AFL-CIO unions', column 7: prints 4,258, the subtotals in columns 8 to 10 add to 4,253; 'Total', column 7: prints 6,435, rows 'AFL-CIO unions' to 'Other local unions' add to 6,440.
Reader’s notes
p. 215. Doubtful cell: row "AFL-CIO unions", column "Employees involved ... / Total eligible". The glyph reads as 4,258 in the scan and is transcribed that way, but it is very likely a 3/8 scan ambiguity for 4,253: the column's four detail entries (4,253 + 1,525 + 107 + 550) sum to the printed total 6,435, the row's two "In polls" entries (1,856 + 2,397) sum to 4,253, and the printed percentages 43.6, 56.4, 66.4 and 36.6 are all consistent with a base of 4,253 but not 4,258. Every other cell in the table is internally consistent (row and column totals, and all percentages, check out). Decimal points: this scan drops or faints many decimal points in the percentage columns, so several cells appear as e.g. "66 7", "33 3", "51 5", "68 3", "36 6", "73 2", "35 9", "43 6", "91 6", "80 7", "69 0", "72 7", "8 4". These are plainly decimal percentages (and are confirmed by arithmetic), so they are transcribed with the decimal point restored. Header structure: four printed heading levels, 15 columns. "Total" and "Total eligible" under "Number of polls" and "Employees involved", and "Total" and "Percent of total eligible" under "Valid votes cast", are tall single headings spanning levels 2-4; "Resulting in deauthorization" / "Resulting in continued authorization" under "Number of polls" and "Cast for deauthorization" under "Valid votes cast" span levels 2-3. The caption ("Table 12.—Results of Union-Shop Deauthorization Polls in Cases Closed, Fiscal Year 1981") and a vertical running word ("Appendix") printed sideways in the right margin are omitted. The "Teamsters" row label is printed with a stray leader-dot group ("Teamsters .... ."); leader dots are dropped.
