  1. 1 See Glossary for definitions of terms. Data in this table are based on unfair labor practice cases that were closed during fiscal year 1981 after the company and/or union had satisfied all remedial action requirements.
  2. 2 A single case usually results in more than one remedial action, therefore, the total number of actions exceeds the number of cases involved.

224 of 231 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 4 cells break a sum: 'Objections to employment withd', column 9: prints 251, columns 10 to 14 add to 250; 'A. By number of cases involved', column 2: prints 12,114, the subtotals in columns 3 to 9 add to 0; 'From both employer and union', column 2: prints 162, the subtotals in columns 3 to 9 add to 324; 'From both employer and union', column 2: prints 99, the subtotals in columns 3 to 9 add to 198.

Reader’s notes

p. 193. Crop content: the image shows only section "A. By number of cases involved"; the table is cut off below the closing rule, so any section B and the footnote texts (markers 1 in the caption and 2 on the 12,114 cell) are not printed on this image — hence an empty `footnotes` list. Column structure: 14 printed columns — stub, "Total all", then six Employer columns (Total; Informal settlement; Formal settlement; Recommendation of administrative law judge; Board; Court) and the same six for Union. Cell reading notes: - "A. By number of cases involved" / Total all: printed as a small raised 2 immediately before 12,114; transcribed as 12,114^2. The period after "A" is faint in the scan but the label is read as "A. By number of cases involved". - Typesetting offset: in several rows the Union-side figures sit a line higher than the row label they belong to (e.g. the 97 / 73 / 4 / 0 / 13 / 7 group beside "Employees placed on preferential hiring list"). Assignment was settled by the printed arithmetic: 73+4+0+13+7 = 97 = the "Hiring hall rights restored" total, while 566+39+2+94+49 = 750 closes the preferential-hiring-list row with its Union cells blank. Rows "Hiring hall rights restored", "Objections to employment withdrawn", "Picketing ended" and "Work stoppage ended" therefore have empty Employer cells, and rows "Recognition or other assistance withdrawn" through "Employees placed on preferential hiring list" have empty Union cells, as printed. - Every row's components add to its printed Employer total, Union total and Total all; no misprints detected. - Hyphenated line breaks repaired in labels ("assist-ance", "prefer-ential", "employ-ment") and in the headings ("Recom-menda-tion of adminis-trative law judge"). The hyphen in "Employer-dominated" is printed within a line and kept. - A faint apostrophe-like mark in the "Total all" heading box just above the body is a scan artifact, not a footnote marker. Rotated running text ("Appendix") along the right edge of the page was ignored.

p. 194. The crop is the second page of the table: it carries the full column headings but the body begins with section B, so section A (By number of cases involved) is on the preceding page. Fourteen columns: stub, "Total all", then six Employer columns (Total; Informal settlement; Formal settlement; Recommendation of administrative law judge; Board; Court) and the same six for Union. Possible misprint: in "Objections to employment withdrawn" the Union detail cells (142 + 25 + 0 + 44 + 39) sum to 250, not the 251 printed in the Union "Total" and "Total all" columns. The figures are transcribed exactly as printed; "142" is the cell I am least sure of (143 would reconcile the row). Every other row's components sum to its printed totals. Scan artifacts, not footnote markers or digits: a small tick sits in the "Total all" column just left of 6,463 in the "Employees offered reinstatement, total" row, and another just left of 39 in the Union "Court" column of the "Objections to employment withdrawn" row. Neither is transcribed. Section-letter punctuation: the label reads "B" followed by a wide space before "By number of employees affected"; a period is not legible at this resolution but the spacing and the table's style indicate "B." — transcribed with the period. Rows with values only on one side of the table (Hiring hall rights restored; Objections to employment withdrawn, union-only; Employees placed on preferential hiring list and the "offered reinstatement" block, employer-only) have genuinely blank cells on the other side in the original; they are left empty. No footnotes are printed under the table on this page.

p. 195. This crop is the final page of a multi-page table: the body begins at section "C By amounts of monetary recovery, total", so sections A and B appear on earlier pages. The column headings are reprinted in full on this page and are transcribed above. Fourteen columns: stub, "Total all", then six Employer columns (Total; Informal settlement; Formal settlement; Recommendation of administrative law judge; Board; Court) and the same six for Union. The Employer and Union "Total" columns sit outside the "Pursuant to—" spanner, which covers only the five columns to the right of each Total. The footnote markers 1 and 2 for the two footnotes printed under the table are not visible anywhere on this crop; they are presumably attached to the caption or to headings on an earlier page of the table. The label of the first body row reads "C By amounts of monetary re-/covery, total"; any period after the "C" is not legible in the scan, so it is transcribed without one. Several sentence-final periods in the footnotes are likewise faint in the scan but have been transcribed as periods. Arithmetic checks pass throughout: in each of the three rows the five Employer detail columns sum to the Employer Total, the five Union detail columns sum to the Union Total, and Employer Total + Union Total equals "Total all"; the Backpay and Reimbursement rows also sum to the section C total in every column. A small stray ink mark sits above the rule between the "Recommendation of administrative law judge" and "Board" columns in the Employer block, just above the body; it is not a footnote marker or digit.
