  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U S Department of Commerce

745 of 745 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 295. The crop ends in the middle of the South Atlantic division: the last printed row is "District of Columbia" and the table clearly continues on the following page (no divisional subtotal for that group appears here). The footnote marker "1" on the stub heading "Division and State" refers to a footnote that is not reproduced in this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. In the Maryland row, the "Valid votes cast for unions / Other national unions" cell shows a faint speck of ink just left of the digit; the value itself reads clearly as 2 and the speck appears to be a scan artifact, not a footnote marker or a leading digit. Row-label leader dots (and the stray leader-dot fragments between some state names) were dropped as instructed. All five divisional subtotal rows (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) were checked column by column against their component states and every total reconciles exactly as printed, which supports the column alignment of the numeric cells.

p. 296. This crop is a continuation page: no column headings are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 17 columns (stub plus 16 numeric), counted from the vertical column rules and confirmed by the full-width "Total, all States and areas" line. The South Atlantic group is cut by the crop: its first states (Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia on the preceding page) are not shown, so the printed "South Atlantic" subtotal is larger than the sum of the six state rows above it here (e.g. column 1: rows shown sum to 41 against the printed 61). This is a crop effect, not a misprint. As an accuracy check I summed every fully contained group: East South Central, West South Central, Mountain, Pacific and Outlying Areas each reconcile exactly with their member state rows in all 16 numeric columns. In the "Virgin Islands" row there is a small stray ink mark immediately to the left of the 0 in column 13 (the column in which Hawaii shows 7); it appears to be a scanning/typesetting artifact rather than a footnote marker or a digit, and the cell is transcribed as 0. Column 13 of that row is otherwise clear. Row labels are followed by leader dots of varying length, which have been dropped. Leading zeros are printed as 0 throughout and are transcribed as such.
