  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

971 of 971 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 291. The crop ends mid-table: the last printed line is "District of Columbia", which is part of an incomplete South Atlantic division block (no divisional subtotal for it appears on this image), and the table continues on the following page. The stub heading carries a raised footnote marker 1 ("Division and State 1"), but no footnote text is printed within the crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Division subtotal rows (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) are printed indented and set off by rules; they are transcribed with their labels as printed. All internal arithmetic I checked is consistent as transcribed: in every state row the four union-detail columns sum to the adjacent "Total" (both for elections won and for valid votes cast for unions), and each division subtotal equals the sum of its member states in all 16 numeric columns. No misprints detected. Possible ambiguity worth flagging: Michigan, "Other national unions" under elections won, reads 51, which is unusually large relative to neighbouring states, but it is clearly printed and is required for the row (103+47+51+8=209) and column (21+9+19+51+3=103) totals to balance, so it is not a misreading.

p. 292. This crop continues a table from the preceding page: no column headings are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 17 columns (stub + 16 numeric), the count confirmed by the column rules and by the arithmetic of the subtotal rows. Arithmetic checks: every subtotal row whose member rows are fully contained in this crop reconciles exactly in all 16 numeric columns — East South Central, West South Central, Mountain, Pacific and Outlying Areas. The "South Atlantic" subtotal is larger than the sum of the six South Atlantic states shown here because the region's first states (Delaware, Maryland and the District of Columbia) are printed on the previous page; the residual is plausible in every column. The "Total, all States and areas" row cannot be checked against this crop alone. Doubtful marks (values transcribed without them): in the Virginia row, the 15th numeric column shows a small stray diagonal stroke immediately before 4,875; it does not match the shape of any footnote marker used in this report and reads as a scanning speck, so the cell is given as 4,875. In the New Mexico row, a small isolated dot sits just left of 88 in the 13th numeric column; likewise treated as a speck, cell given as 88. Leader dots trailing the row labels were dropped as instructed. The scan is a coarse bitonal image in which small periods frequently drop out; the periods in "U.S." and the closing period of the footnote are faint but were transcribed as printed in the original typesetting.
