  1. 1 Sec. 8(a)(3) of the Act requires that to revoke a union-shop agreement a majority of the employees eligible to vote must vote in favor of deauthorization.

40 of 40 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 281. Periods reproduce very faintly in this scan: every percentage cell appears as a digit group separated by a blank (e.g. \"54 6\", \"28 1\", \"23 0\"). These are decimal points and have been transcribed as such; each one checks out arithmetically against its own column pair (83/152 = 54.6, 4,300/15,312 = 28.1, 3,518/15,312 = 23.0, and so on for every row). The same faintness affects the footnote, where \"Sec 8(a)(3)\" is read as \"Sec. 8(a)(3)\" and a terminal period is supplied.\n\nThe table is internally consistent: the four affiliation rows sum exactly to the Total row in all eight count columns (98+34+9+11 = 152; 55+22+1+5 = 83; 43+12+8+6 = 69; 8,479+2,853+3,014+966 = 15,312; 2,887+766+146+501 = 4,300; 5,592+2,087+2,868+465 = 11,012; 6,797+2,300+1,073+778 = 10,948; 2,285+706+110+417 = 3,518). No misprints detected.\n\nTwo stray ink specks are scan dirt, not characters: a small blot immediately left of \"12\" in the Teamsters row under Number of polls / Resulting in continued authorization, and a dot in the stub margin beside \"Other national unions\". Neither is transcribed.\n\nColumn structure: 15 columns (stub plus 5 under \"Number of polls\", 5 under \"Employees involved\", 4 under \"Valid votes cast\"). Four heading levels are used because \"In polls\" occupies a band of its own above the \"Resulting in ...\" headings in the Employees involved block, while the parallel \"Resulting in ...\" headings under \"Number of polls\" are set one level lower and span two levels. Columns 13 and 15 both carry the heading \"Percent of total eligible\"; the last one belongs to the \"Cast for deauthorization\" pair.
