  1. 1 See Glossary for definitions of terms
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the 10 Standard Federal Administrative Regions

880 of 881 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'Idaho', column 2: prints 197, the subtotals in columns 3 to 17 add to 198; 'Region X', column 16: prints 4, rows 'Alaska' to 'Washington' add to 5.

Reader’s notes

p. 267. 17 printed columns: stub, "All cases", eight unfair-labor-practice columns (All C cases, CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CG, CP), four representation columns (All R cases, RC, RM, RD), then UD, AC and UC. The crop ends after the "Region IV" subtotal; the table continues on the following page (Regions V onward and any grand total are not on this image). No footnote text is printed on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty even though two markers appear: a raised 1 on the caption (excluded as part of the caption) and a raised 2 on the stub heading "Standard Federal Regions", which I kept as `Standard Federal Regions^2`. The texts of notes 1 and 2 must be elsewhere on the page or on a continuation page. Verification: I summed each region's member states for all 16 numeric columns against the printed Region I, II, III and IV subtotal lines, and every one of the 64 column totals agrees with the printed figure, so no misprints are suspected and the column alignment is confirmed. Typography: the scan uses dotless i/ligature forms in several labels (e.g. "Mississippi", "Virginia", "Connecticut", "Region"), transcribed with normal spelling. Column-heading words broken by end-of-line hyphens were rejoined: "deau-thori-zation" to "deauthorization", "Amend-ment" to "Amendment", "certi-fica-tion" to "certification", "clari-fica-tion" to "clarification". "All cases" and the stub heading span both heading levels and are repeated in each, per the instructions.

p. 268. This crop is a continuation page: no column headings or caption are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid has a stub plus 16 numeric columns, read off the vertical column rules. The table continues from the previous page (Regions I-IV and the states in them are not on this image); the "Total, all States and areas" row at the foot therefore cannot be checked against the rows shown here. Verification: I summed each region's member states against its printed subtotal. Every column of Regions V, VI, VII, VIII and IX agrees exactly, as do 15 of the 16 columns of Region X. The one exception is Region X, column 15 (the second-to-last column): the printed subtotal is 4, while Alaska 1 + Idaho 1 + Oregon 2 + Washington 1 = 5. All five of those figures are single digits and print clearly at this resolution, so this looks like an arithmetic misprint in the source rather than a misreading; it is transcribed exactly as printed. Minor marks: there is a small stray ink speck under the "114" of Nevada (column 4) and two stray dots in the white space just below the table body; neither is a digit or a footnote marker, and both are ignored. The second footnote's marker is a raised "2" that the scan renders in a shape close to a lowercase "a"; the wording ("the 10 Standard Federal Administrative Regions") confirms it is footnote 2. Row labels are followed by leader dots of varying length, which have been dropped. No footnote markers appear on any row label or value in this crop.
