  1. 1 See Glossary for definitions of terms
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U S Department of Commerce

877 of 877 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'North Carolina', column 2: prints 774, the subtotals in columns 3 to 17 add to 773; 'South Atlantic', column 17: prints 35, rows 'Delaware' to 'Florida' add to 34.

Reader’s notes

p. 265. The crop ends mid-table: the last printed body line is North Carolina, and the South Atlantic division total and all remaining divisions (South Atlantic through Pacific, plus the national total) continue on the following page. The UC (last column) cell for North Carolina is left empty because the crop's bottom edge cuts through it and no digit is legible; every other row in the crop has a printed UC value, so a value is probably present there in the source. Footnote markers appear on the caption (raised 1, caption excluded per instructions) and on the stub heading "Division and State" (raised 2), but no footnote text is printed on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Row labels for Vermont, Indiana and Kansas are followed by a surviving leader dot that reads as a period; it has been dropped. The "All cases" heading and the stub heading span both heading levels and are repeated in each. Nothing was computed or checked for arithmetic consistency; all values are as printed.

p. 266. This crop is a continuation page: no column headings are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid is stub + 16 data columns (confirmed by the "Total, all States and areas" row and by the column rules). The table is continued from the preceding page: the South Atlantic subtotal row covers states (Delaware, Maryland, D.C., Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina) that are printed on the earlier page and are not on this crop, so that subtotal cannot be checked here. All other subtotals reconcile exactly with the states printed above them in every one of the 16 columns (East South Central, West South Central, Mountain, Pacific, Outlying areas), which cross-validates the column alignment of this transcription. The rightmost (16th) column sits flush against the right edge of the crop and a few of its digits are slightly shaved (notably Puerto Rico and Outlying areas, both read as 8). The Outlying-areas identity 8 = 8 + 0 confirms those are single-digit values and nothing is lost. Several row labels are printed with a period immediately after the word (e.g. "Kentucky.", "Colorado.", "California.", "Alaska.", "West South Central."); these are the first character of the leader-dot run and were dropped per the leader-dot rule. In footnote 2 the scan shows "U S Department" — the periods after U and S either did not survive the 1-bit scan or are not printed; transcribed as it appears. Footnote markers 1 and 2 have no referents visible on this crop; they attach to the caption and column headings on the preceding page.
