1 "Proceedings" are comparable to "cases" reported in annual reports prior to fiscal 1964. This term more accurately describes the data inasmuch as a single "proceeding" often includes more than one "case." See Glossary for definition of terms.
2 A proceeding in which the Board had entered an order dismissing the complaint and the charging party appealed such dismissal in the courts of appeals.
3 The Board appeared amicus in New York Telephone Co. v. New York State Department of Labor, 440 U.S. 519 (1979). In that case, the Supreme Court held, in accord with the Board's position, that a state statute providing for the payment of unemployment benefits to strikers was not in conflict with the NLRA.

Reader’s notes

p. 326. 12 columns: stub, 5 "Number of proceedings" columns and 4 "Percentages" columns under "Fiscal year 1979", then Number and Percent under the cumulative heading. The stub has no printed heading (the cell is blank apart from a stray ink mark), so the stub cells of the header rows are empty. Scan artifact: this page renders with small dots dropped (e.g. "Fiscal" prints with a dotless i), so periods and decimal points are frequently invisible. The percentage cells appear as "100 0", "64 6", etc.; they are one-decimal percentages and I have transcribed them with the decimal point ("100.0", "64.6"). Likewise I restored the periods in "U.S.", "Sept. 30", "Vs." and in the footnote sentences. No digits were altered. Rows 1, 8 and 12 are the unindented/section-level lines; the rows under each are indented sub-items, kept in the order printed. Row 1 ("Proceedings decided by U.S. courts of appeals") has dash rules in all four percentage columns and in both cumulative columns, transcribed as "". Row 8 ("On petitions for contempt") and its three sub-rows have dash rules in the cumulative Number/Percent columns. Two printed percentages differ slightly from what the counts imply (transcribed as printed, not corrected): "Board orders set aside" under petitions for review shows 17.3 in "Vs. employers only" where 57/328 rounds to 17.4; "Board orders set aside" under the Supreme Court section shows 16.0 in the cumulative Percent column where 36/226 rounds to 15.9. Both choices make the respective columns sum to 100.0. The footnote 2 marker on the "Board dismissal" heading belongs only to the heading in the "Number of proceedings" panel; the "Board dismissal" heading in the Percentages panel carries no marker.
