  1. 1 Sec. 8(a)(3) of the Act requires that to revoke a union-shop agreement a majority of the employees eligible to vote must vote in favor of deauthorization.

40 of 40 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 308. The scan renders periods very faintly, so decimal points in the percent columns appear as gaps (e.g. "68 7", "31 3"). They are decimal points: every paired percent in the table sums to 100.0 (68.7+31.3, 53.1+46.9, 68.9+31.1, 49.8+50.2, 72.2+27.8, 71.6+28.4, 50.0+50.0, 41.1+58.9, 7.7+92.3), and the "percent of total eligible" figures reproduce the ratios of the adjacent counts. I have therefore written them with decimal points. The same degradation affects "Sec." in the footnote and its closing period. The table is internally consistent: all four affiliation rows sum exactly to the Total row in every count column (134, 92, 42, 5,702, 3,025, 2,677, 4,929, 2,557). Stray ink marks that are scanner specks, not footnote markers: a short vertical tick just right of "28" (AFL-CIO unions, Number of polls / Resulting in continued authorization / Number), a similar tick right of "10" (Teamsters, same column), and a small dot left of "2" (Other national unions, same column). None is a printed reference symbol, so none is transcribed. Header structure: four printed heading levels. Column 2 ("Total" under Number of polls), column 7 ("Total eligible"), column 12 ("Total" under Valid votes cast) and column 13 ("Percent of total eligible") are tall single headings spanning levels 2 through 4, and the stub heading spans all four. "Resulting in deauthorization" / "Resulting in continued authorization" under Number of polls and "Cast for deauthorization" under Valid votes cast span levels 2 and 3, while under Employees involved the matching headings sit one level lower, beneath "In polls". The "Percent" of column 9 prints as "Pei cent" from a broken r-c ligature; read as "Percent of total".
