731 of 732 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'Oil and gas extraction', column 2: prints 72, the subtotals in columns 3 to 17 add to 73; 'Mining', column 16: prints 1, rows 'Metal mining' to 'Mining and quarrying' add to 2.

Reader’s notes

p. 289. Crop/completeness: the table is cut off at the bottom of the page. It ends after "Mining and quarrying of nonmetallic minerals (except fuels)"; the remaining nonmanufacturing groups and any grand total continue on the following page. Footnote markers 1 (on the caption) and 2 (on the stub heading "Industrial group") are printed, but no footnote text appears within this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Column structure: 17 columns. The spanner "Unfair labor practice cases" covers All C cases / CA / CB / CC / CD / CE / CG / CP; "Representation cases" covers All R cases / RC / RM / RD; "Union deauthorization cases" (UD), "Amendment of certification cases" (AC) and "Unit clarification cases" (UC) each cover one column. Wrapped/hyphenated headings were rejoined ("deau-thori-zation", "Amend-ment ... certi-fica-tion", "Unit clari-fica-tion"). Verification: every column was summed against the printed "Manufacturing" subtotal row and every manufacturing row against its printed "All C cases", "All R cases" and "All cases" totals. All 22 manufacturing rows and all 16 value columns reconcile exactly as transcribed. Doubtful cell 1 — "Furniture and fixtures", column CE: this cell sits on a tightly leaded line next to "Lumber and wood products (except furniture)", whose CE is 2, and my first read of the glyph was ambiguous between 0 and 2. I transcribed 0. Both independent printed checks require 0: the row's All C cases total of 491 (403+84+0+1+0+0+3) and the CE column total of 21 in the Manufacturing row (the other CE entries alone sum to exactly 21). A 2 would break both. Doubtful cell 2 — "Oil and gas extraction", column AC: transcribed as printed (1), but this row does not add. 63 (All C) + 9 (All R) + 0 (UD) + 1 (AC) + 0 (UC) = 73, while "All cases" is printed as 72. The AC and UC columns in the mining block are typeset with a slight downward vertical offset relative to their rows, so this 1 may belong to the "Coal mining" line (whose own AC is read as 1) or the printed All cases figure may be a misprint for 73. The other three mining rows add correctly as transcribed (Metal mining 90+15+0+0+2=107; Coal mining 351+71+0+1+3=426; Mining and quarrying 87+46+0+0+2=135). No column total is printed for the mining block on this page, so the ambiguity cannot be resolved from the image alone. Minor: a small isolated dot appears in the UC column between the "Apparel..." and "Lumber..." rows; it is a scan speck, not a value, and no cell was created for it. The AC value 33 in the "Manufacturing" row prints faintly but is legible and is confirmed by the AC column sum. Leader dots after row labels were dropped; multi-line row labels were joined and end-of-line hyphens repaired ("ma-chinery" to "machinery").

p. 290. This crop is the continuation (second) page of the table: no column headings are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid has a stub plus 16 data columns, counted from the column rules and confirmed on every body row. The body begins mid-table with "Mining"; the earlier industry groups and all headings are on the preceding page, so the grand total row cannot be checked against the rows shown here. Arithmetic checks performed on the two subtotal blocks fully contained in this crop: all 16 columns of the "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" subtotal and all 16 columns of the "Services" subtotal equal the sum of their member rows exactly. No internal inconsistency found. Punctuation notes (1-bit scan, fine marks degraded): the stub label printed as "U S Postal Service" shows no clearly legible periods; transcribed as "U.S. Postal Service". Likewise footnote 2 shows a gap rather than a legible colon after "Source", and the sentence-ending periods of both footnotes are faint; standard punctuation has been supplied in those two footnote strings. The 50 in column 8 of "Health services" is unusual against the zeros elsewhere in that column, but it is confirmed by the "Services" subtotal (50) and the grand total (50) in the same column, so it is read as printed and correctly placed. A stray ink mark/scratch appears in the white space near the "Local and suburban transit..." label and above the column-13 area of that block; it is not a character and carries no value. The apparent tick before "105" in the "Health services" row, column 13, is a scan artifact, not a digit or a footnote marker.
