Reader’s notes
p. 291. Grid is 15 columns: stub + 4 summary columns + four Number/Percent pairs under "Elections in which representation rights were won by" + one Number/Percent pair under "Elections in which no representative was chosen". Decimal points: this is a degraded 1-bit scan and the decimal point drops out of many (not all) percent values, so cells print as e.g. "23 6", "100 0", "0 8" beside correctly printed neighbours such as "21.6" and "8.7". Every such cell is a one-decimal percentage and I have written the decimal point in. This is restoration of a character lost by the scanner, not normalisation; it is confirmed arithmetically — see below. Arithmetic checks (all passed, no misprints found): "Total elections" sums to 7,433; "Number eligible to vote" sums to 432,264; the five Number columns sum to 2,037 / 1,054 / 239 / 248 / 3,855 exactly as printed in the total row; "Percent of total" accumulates to exactly the printed "Cumulative percent of total" at every one of the 29 size classes; and each of the five "Percent by size class" columns sums to exactly 100.0. These confirm both the digit readings and the column each value sits in. Section line: the panel heading reads "A Certification elections (RC and RM)" in the scan, with a gap but no visible point after the A. I have written "A." because the point is lost to the same scan defect that drops the decimal points, and the companion panel in this table series is lettered "B.". Row-label column: the total row's label is right-aligned in the stub, the size-class labels left-aligned; this is typesetting only and all are in column 0. Crop: the table is cut off at the bottom. Panel A ends here at "3,000 to 9,999" with no printed subtotal, and the expected larger size classes plus panel B (decertification elections) are not on this image. No footnotes are printed in the crop. "Other national unions" in the heading is printed with a damaged "i" in "national"; the wording is as transcribed. "AFL-CIO" uses an en-rule-like hyphen in the scan, transcribed as a plain hyphen. Blank percent cells: where a Number cell is "0" the matching percent cell carries a dash rule ("------"), transcribed as "". The total row's "Cumulative percent of total" cell is likewise a dash rule.
p. 292. CROP SCOPE: this is the right-hand half of a wide table that is spread across a two-page opening; only the panel heading "B. Decertification elections (RD)" is printed here, spanning all 14 numeric columns. The individual column headings for those 14 columns (and the stub heading) are printed on the facing page and are NOT on this image, so they are not reconstructed. The 14 columns group plainly as 7 pairs of the form (count, percent): employees eligible / elections+percent+cumulative percent, then five count+percent pairs with panel totals 141, 51, 14, 7 and 594. DECIMAL POINTS: the 1-bit scan has dropped the decimal point from many figures in the percent and cumulative-percent columns, which render as "29 1", "100 0", "17 6" etc. The point is clearly present in other rows of the very same columns ("3.8", "90.1", "92.6", "0.7", "3.0", "2.0", "14.3"), so this is scanner dropout, not the printed form, and I have transcribed all such cells as X.X. This is confirmed arithmetically: the cumulative-percent column's successive differences reproduce the percent column exactly for all 22 rows (29.1, 24.8, 11.3, 8.4, 3.8, 4.8, 3.1, 1.6, 1.0, 1.0, 1.2, 0.6, 0.7, 1.2, 0.7, 0.5, 0.6, 0.6, 2.1, 2.2, 0.5, 0.2), and each of the five percent columns sums to exactly 100.0. COLUMN TOTALS VERIFIED: employees sum to 39,555; election counts sum to 807, 141, 51, 14, 7 and 594 — all matching the printed "Total RD elections" row. No printed total appears to be in error. MISSING SIZE CLASS: the stub jumps from "300 to 399" straight to "500 to 799"; there is no "400 to 499" line on this page. The cumulative percents (99.3 then 99.8) are continuous across the gap, so the class is absent from the printed table rather than cut off by the crop. APPARENT MISPRINT: in the "10 to 19" row, the percent column of the 14-election group reads 35.9, whereas 5 of 14 is 35.7. Transcribed as printed; note that 35.9 is what makes that column sum to exactly 100.0. PANEL LABEL: the heading shows "B" followed by a gap about twice a word-space wide before "Decertification"; I read that gap as a dropped period and transcribed "B. Decertification elections (RD)". The period itself is not legible in this scan. FOOTNOTE MARKER: the raised 1 that footnote 1 answers to is not printed anywhere on this crop — it belongs to the table caption or to a heading on the facing page. No value or row label on this image carries a footnote marker. ROW PLACEMENT: "Total RD elections" sits immediately under the panel-heading rule, in line with where column headings would be; it is a data-bearing body row, not a heading, and is transcribed as the first row of the body.
