  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the 10 Standard Federal Administrative regions.

970 of 970 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 287. 17 columns. The stub heading carries a raised 1 ("Standard Federal regions^1"), but the text of footnote 1 is not printed on this crop — the table ends at a double rule just below the Region IV line, so the footnote (and the remaining regions, V onward) must appear elsewhere. The table as cropped covers only Regions I-IV. Doubtful cell resolved by arithmetic: Delaware, "Valid votes cast for unions / Other national unions" prints a glyph that could be read as "CO" rather than "60"; it is 60, since the Region II subtotal for that column (2,980) requires 60 (60+426+2,440+54+0). I checked every one of the 16 numeric columns against each of the four regional subtotal rows (Region I-IV); all 64 column sums agree exactly with the printed subtotals, so no misprints are suspected. Typographic details: the printed headings read "represent-tation" (hyphenated across lines, rendered "representation"), "Team-sters" ("Teamsters"), and "AFL-CIO" is set with an en dash, transcribed as a plain hyphen.

p. 288. This crop is the continuation page of a table that begins on the previous page: no column headings are printed on this image, so header_rows is empty. The body here starts mid-way through Region V (Illinois onward); the States of Regions I-IV, and the first States of Region V (Illinois is preceded on the earlier page by at least one more State, since the printed Region V subtotals exceed the six States shown — see below), are on the preceding page. The grid has 17 columns: the stub plus 16 numeric columns, separated by vertical rules after the stub, after column 7, and after column 15. Arithmetic check: every regional subtotal row on this page (Regions V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X) reconciles exactly with the sum of the State rows printed above it, in all 16 numeric columns, which confirms both the digits and the column assignment for those blocks. (Region V's subtotal equals the sum of the six States shown here, so no additional Region V States are carried over from the previous page.) The "Total, all Federal regions" row could not be checked because Regions I-IV are not on this crop. Guam, column 12: the printed 0 is preceded by a small ink mark or stray dot ("·0"); I read it as a typographic artifact and transcribed the cell as 0. Guam, last column: a plain 0 is printed, not a blank. The footnote marker 1 at the end of the footnote's referent (the stub heading "State") is not visible on this crop; only the footnote text itself is printed here, below the table.
