Reader’s notes

p. 278. 15 columns: stub plus three spanner groups (Number of polls, 5 columns; Employees involved, 5 columns; Valid votes cast, 4 columns). "Total" under Number of polls, "Total eligible" under Employees involved, and "Total" and "Percent of total eligible" under Valid votes cast are tall single headings repeated down all heading levels; "In polls" is a level-2 spanner over the four Employees-involved detail columns, so the heading grid has four levels. In many of the one-decimal percent cells the decimal point is very faint or dropped out in the scan, so it reads as a space (e.g. "36 4", "65 9", "78 5" in the Total row; "38 5", "43 8", "56 2", "79 8", "33 9" in AFL-CIO Unions; "73 5", "26 5", "15 9", "13 9" in Teamsters; "60 0", "40 0", "42 8", "57 2", "83 6" in Other national unions; "60 0", "42 0", "90 0" in Other local unions). These are decimal points, not thousands separators or missing digits, and are transcribed as "." — every one of these values matches the ratio of the printed counts to the printed base to within rounding. All column and percentage arithmetic checks out: the four affiliation rows sum to the printed Total row in every count column (140, 89, 51, 9,060, 3,087, 5,973, 7,116, 2,451), and each percent agrees with its underlying counts. No suspected misprints. The crop shows the full table, caption, and the single footnote.
