  1. 1 See Glossary for definitions of terms.
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

880 of 881 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 5 cells break a sum: 'West Virginia', column 3: prints 148, columns 4 to 10 add to 448; 'West Virginia', column 2: prints 543, the subtotals in columns 3 to 17 add to 243; 'Oklahoma', column 2: prints 364, the subtotals in columns 3 to 17 add to 360; 'West South Central', column 17: prints 26, rows 'Arkansas' to 'Texas' add to 22; 'South Atlantic', column 3: prints 4,389, rows 'Delaware' to 'Florida' add to 4,089.

Reader’s notes

p. 263. The crop is cut off at the bottom: "Virginia" is the last row fully printed on this image, and the table continues (the South Atlantic division subtotal and all remaining divisions/states are on the following portion). No footnote texts appear on this crop, although footnote markers are present (a raised 1 on the caption, which is excluded, and a raised 2 on the stub heading "Division and State"); the footnote texts must be on the continuation. Column structure: 17 columns — stub, "All cases", eight columns under "Unfair labor practice cases" (All C cases, CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CG, CP), four under "Representation cases" (All R cases, RC, RM, RD), then UD, AC, UC. Scan quality is good and no cell was doubtful. As a cross-check, for every state row the C-case detail sums to the printed "All C cases" and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC equals the printed "All cases"; the division subtotal rows also equal the sums of their member states. No discrepancies found, so nothing was adjusted.

p. 264. This crop is a continuation page: no column headings are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 17 columns (stub + 16 numeric columns), read off the vertical rules; the last numeric column is set wider than the others but is a single column (values 5, 0, 2, 4, 5, 24, ... 327). The crop begins mid-way through the South Atlantic group (Delaware through Virginia are on the preceding page), so that group's subtotal is larger than the sum of the five State rows shown here; all other groups are complete on this page. Two cells disagree with the table's internal arithmetic and are transcribed exactly as they appear: - West Virginia, column 2 (the total-C-cases column): printed as "148". Both internal checks require 448 here (315+97+15+4+3+1+13 = 448, and 448+90+0+0+5 = 543, the printed row total). The leading digit is ambiguous in this 1-bit scan; it is either a misprint for 448 or a "4" that scanned as a "1". Treat this cell as doubtful. - Oklahoma, last column: printed as "0". Both internal checks require 4 (243+113+4+0+4 = 364, the printed row total; and the West South Central subtotal of 26 = 2+4+4+16). Either a misprint or a doubtful glyph; transcribed as read. Every other cell on the page reconciles on all three internal relations (col 2 = sum of cols 3-9; col 10 = sum of cols 11-13; col 1 = col 2 + col 10 + cols 14+15+16; and each group subtotal = sum of its State rows), which supports the column assignment of the numbers. Row labels carry no footnote markers on this crop; the two footnote markers (1 and 2) belong to the caption/headings on the first page of the table. The second footnote's marker is printed as a raised 2 (it scans somewhat like a 3).
