Reader’s notes
p. 325. 23 columns: stub, two "Total" columns, then five outcome groups (Affirmed in full; Modified; Remanded in full; Affirmed in part and remanded in part; Set aside), each with Number/Percent for fiscal year 1977 and for cumulative fiscal years 1972-76. Faint printing: many decimal points dropped out in the scan and read as a space (e.g. "4 9" in Total all circuits / Remanded in full / Cumulative / Percent, "70 6" for Boston, "73 9" for Philadelphia, "2 5" for New York, "8 7" for Philadelphia's Set aside FY percent, "61 2" for Cincinnati, "76 1" for Washington, "19 0" for San Francisco, "4 9"). These are transcribed with the decimal point restored; no digits were in doubt. Likewise the periods in abbreviations ("N Y", "St Louis, Mo", "D.C") are faint and are written in standard form. Percent cells printed as a dash rule (------), meaning no percentage computed because the count is 0, are transcribed as "". Note Denver's Remanded in full / Cumulative shows a printed 0 in the Number column with a dash rule in the Percent column. The circuit numbers 1-10 are printed at the left of the stub with no column rule separating them, so they are kept as part of the row label; the row for San Francisco prints its number as "9." with a period, and the last row (Washington, D.C.) carries no number. The heading reads "Remanded in full" (the i prints without its dot). All rows and columns were checked against the printed totals: every circuit's five outcome counts sum to its row total, and every column sums to the "Total all circuits" line, in both the fiscal year 1977 and the 1972-76 cumulative panels. A few printed percentages are off by 0.1 from the recomputed value (e.g. Cincinnati 61 2 for 19/31 = 61.3, Washington 76 1 for 16/21 = 76.2, Philadelphia 4.4 for 4/92 = 4.3), apparently from truncation; they are transcribed as printed. The footnote marker 1 is not visible attached to any heading or cell in the body; it most likely belongs to the caption, which is excluded. The caption's first line is slightly clipped at the right edge of the crop, which does not affect the grid.
