723 of 724 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'Retail trade', column 3: prints 3,828, columns 4 to 10 add to 3,827; 'Total, all industrial groups', column 6: prints 1,737, the subtotals in rows 'Manufacturing' to 'Public administratio' add to 1,736.

Reader’s notes

p. 291. Crop covers only the manufacturing half of Table 5; the table ends at the "Manufacturing" subtotal rule and continues (nonmanufacturing industries, and the grand total) on the following page(s). No footnote texts are printed on this crop, although markers appear in the caption (^1) and on the stub heading "Industrial group^2". Two cells in the "All cases" column are damaged in the scan and were read with help from the arithmetic: (a) "Printing, publishing, and allied products" prints as "1,4_1" with the third digit broken — transcribed 1,461, which is what the row's components (1,003 + 416 + 7 + 8 + 27) and the column total require; (b) "Primary metal industries" prints as "1,66?" with a blurred last digit — transcribed 1,665, likewise required by 1,306 + 348 + 3 + 0 + 8 and by the column total. No other value was inferred. Verification: every one of the 16 numeric columns sums exactly to the printed "Manufacturing" figure, and every one of the 22 industry rows satisfies All cases = All C + All R + UD + AC + UC as well as the within-panel subtotals (All C = CA..CP, All R = RC + RM + RD). No misprints detected. A stray diagonal pen/pencil stroke crosses the "Union deauthorization cases (UD)" column beside the "Lumber and wood products" / "Furniture and fixtures" rows; it is a hand mark on the page, not type, and does not obscure the values (both read 6). The CG column is 0 for every industry and 0 in the total, as printed.

p. 292. Continuation page: no column headings are printed on this crop, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 17 columns (stub + 16 numeric), counted from the column rules and confirmed by the body rows and the "Total, all industrial groups" line. Column placement was verified arithmetically throughout: in every row columns 3-9 sum to column 2, columns 11-13 sum to column 10, and columns 2+10+14+15+16 sum to column 1; the three printed group subtotals (Mining, "Transportation, communication, and other utilities", Services) also reproduce the column-by-column sums of the rows above them. These checks fix the narrow right-hand columns (14, 15, 16), which are the hardest to place on this scan. One internal inconsistency as printed: in the "Retail trade" row the component cells 2,965 + 660 + 92 + 16 + 6 + 0 + 88 give 3,827, but column 2 is printed 3,828. The row's other checks pass (1,483+252+368 = 2,103, and 3,828+2,103+70+1+54 = 6,056), and the grand-total line is internally consistent, so this looks like a one-unit misprint (or an eroded digit) somewhere in the Retail trade component cells; all cells are transcribed exactly as read, nothing corrected. "Miscellaneous services" (second-to-last body row before the Services subtotal) is degraded in the 1-bit scan and renders roughly as "Miscellaneouls services"; transcribed as the intended "Miscellaneous services". Footnote 2's marker is a small eroded superscript glyph that could be read as an asterisk rather than a "2"; it is transcribed as "2" on the assumption that it follows footnote 1. The punctuation after "Source" in that line is a single faint mark that may be a colon rather than a period. "Electric, gas and sanitary services" is printed without a serial comma, as shown.
