748 of 748 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 271. 17 columns: stub plus 16 numeric columns, read from the column rules. The stub heading carries a raised footnote marker 1 ("Industrial group^1"), but no footnote text is printed inside this crop, so `footnotes` is empty; the note text presumably appears at the end of the table on a later page. The crop ends just below the "Manufacturing" subtotal line (double rule), so the table continues on the following page with the nonmanufacturing groups and the grand total — the portion shown here is complete and internally consistent. All arithmetic checks pass as printed: in every row the union-won subcolumns sum to the "Total" won, total elections = won + no representative, the four union vote subcolumns sum to the valid-votes "Total", total valid votes = union votes + votes for no union, and the "Manufacturing" line equals the sum of the 22 industry rows in every column checked (including 85,018 eligible employees and 30,408 eligible employees in units choosing representation). No illegible or doubtful cells; the printed zeros in the "Ship and boat building and repairing" row (including the final column) are genuine zeros, not blanks.

p. 272. The crop is a continuation page: no column headings are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid is 17 columns (stub + 16 numeric), confirmed by the column rules and by the data. Every number was cross-checked against the arithmetic the table itself implies, and all of it reconciles: in each row col2 = col3+col4+col5+col6 and col1 = col2+col7; col9 = col10+col15 and col10 = col11+col12+col13+col14; and the three group-total rows (Mining, "Transportation, communication, and other utilities", Services) equal the sum of their member rows in all 16 numeric columns. The "Total, all industrial groups" row could not be checked here because earlier industrial groups appear on the preceding page, outside this crop. Doubtful/degraded cells: in the "Social services" row the 5th numeric column is a 0 that is slightly broken in the scan (on a first pass it could be taken for a 1); the printed Services total of 5 in that column and the group arithmetic both confirm 0. "Business services" has a stray ink mark just left of the 28 in the 3rd numeric column; it is printer's noise, not a digit or footnote marker (the column sums to the printed 128 with 28). "Hotels, rooming houses, camps, and other lodging places" likewise has a stray slash after the 7 in the 3rd numeric column. Punctuation lost to the scan: the stub label prints as "U.S Postal Service" (period after the second S not resolved); transcribed as "U.S. Postal Service". In the footnote, the mark after "Source" is likewise unresolved in the scan and is rendered as a colon, the usual form in these reports. The footnote's raised 1 is its marker; no footnote marker appears on any row label, heading or value in the body.
