  1. 1 See Glossary for definitions of terms.
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the 10 Standard Federal Administrative regions.

873 of 874 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 3 cells break a sum: 'Region IX', column 11: prints 2,342, columns 12 to 14 add to 3,342; 'Region IX', column 12: prints 2,820, rows 'Arizona' to 'Nevada' add to 1,820; 'Total, all Federal regions', column 12: prints 11,846, the subtotals in rows 'Region I' to 'Region X' add to 12,846.

Reader’s notes

p. 232. The crop is cut off after the "Region IV" subtotal: the table continues (Regions V onward and any grand total) on the remainder of the page, and no footnote texts are visible, so `footnotes` is empty even though the caption carries marker 1 and the stub heading carries marker 2 (marker 2 is retained on the stub heading). Two scan artifacts, neither of which I treated as a footnote marker or a digit: (a) Pennsylvania, column RC, shows a small caret/tick immediately left of 707; it is an ink speck, and the Region III RC subtotal confirms the value (80+174+707+101+77 = 1,139). (b) North Carolina, column CC, shows a comma-like speck to the left of the 1; the value is 1, confirmed by the North Carolina "All C cases" row sum (334+74+1 = 409) and the Region IV CC subtotal (102). All arithmetic cross-checks pass: for every state row the C-type columns sum to "All C cases" and "All C cases" + "All R cases" + UD + AC + UC equals "All cases"; and for each of Regions I-IV the member states sum to the printed subtotal in all 16 numeric columns. No printed figure appears to be a misprint.

p. 233. This crop is a continuation page: the table body begins mid-list (Region V states) with no column headings printed, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 17 columns (stub + 16 numeric columns); column count was taken from the vertical rules and confirmed on every data row. The regional subtotal rows were checked against the states listed above them and all agree except one: Region IX, column 11 (the second-to-last of the three-column block that reads 2,342 / 2,820 / 236 on that row). The states in Region IX sum to 1,820 in that column (104 + 1,534 + 134 + 6 + 42), but the printed subtotal reads "2, 820". The leading digit is clearly formed and I read it as a 2, so it is transcribed as printed; a reader should treat it as either a printing error for 1,820 or a doubtful glyph. Every other column of Region IX, and every column of Regions V, VI, VII, VIII and X, foots correctly to the states above it. The "Total, all Federal regions" row could not be verified here because Regions I-IV fall on the preceding page, outside this crop. Row labels are followed by leader dots in the original; these have been dropped. Printed zeros are kept as 0. The footnote markers 1 and 2 belong to headings on the earlier page of the table and so do not appear on any cell in this crop.
