Industrial Distribution of Cases Received, Fiscal Year 1976

p. 227. The crop shows only the first page of the table: it ends with the "Manufacturing" subtotal row, and the nonmanufacturing industry groups plus the grand total continue on the following page. The caption carries a superscript 1 and the stub heading a superscript 2, but the texts of footnotes 1 and 2 are printed at the end of the table on a later page, not on this image; the only line printed beneath the rule here is the pointer "See footnotes at end of table.", which I have placed in footnotes even though it carries no marker. All 16 numeric columns were checked against the printed "Manufacturing" subtotal and every one reconciles exactly (e.g. CA sums to 10,242, RD to 624, UC to 133), and each row's "All C cases", "All R cases" and "All cases" agree with its components, so no misprints are suspected. Column headings are two levels; "Industrial group^2" and "All cases" are tall single headings repeated across both levels, as are the three right-hand case-type headings whose second level is UD, AC and UC respectively. The CG column is printed with a value of 0 in every row including the subtotal. Minor scan artifacts: a stray ink fleck sits above the "Apparel..." row near the RC column and another beside "18" in the RM column of the "Machinery (except electrical)" row; neither is a digit or a footnote marker, and both were ignored. The scan renders the dotted i in several labels faintly (e.g. "Textile mill products", "Primary metal industries"), but the wording is unambiguous.

p. 228. The crop is a continuation page: the industry list begins mid-table (the "Mining" block) and is cut off at the bottom, immediately after "Motor freight transportation and warehousing" — more industry rows follow on the page below the crop, and no footnote block is visible, so `footnotes` is empty. Coal mining, UD and AC columns: the scan shows two glyphs in each of these cells ("1 0" under UD, "0 0" under AC) where the other rows show a single right-aligned digit. The extra left-hand glyphs are almost certainly a double-impression/ghost artifact (they reproduce the digits of the Metal mining row directly above and sit left of the column's right-aligned position). I transcribed the rightmost glyph in each: UD "0", AC "0". Both arithmetic checks agree: the row's printed components sum exactly to the All-cases total (291 C + 54 R = 345), leaving 0 for UD+AC+UC; and the Mining subtotals (UD 2, AC 1, UC 6) are exactly matched by the other three mining rows, requiring 0/0/0 for coal mining. Row label "Local and suburban transit and interurban highway passenger transportation": the first word after "and" reads as though it carries an extra "r" ("surburban") in this 1-bit scan. I transcribed the standard SIC wording "suburban"; the glyph is not fully resolvable at this resolution. A small stray ink mark sits just left of the "1" in the U.S. Postal Service row's UC column; it is not a footnote marker or digit and was not transcribed. Every data row verifies internally: CA through CP sum to All C cases, RC+RM+RD sum to All R cases, and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC equals All cases, for all 12 rows. The "Mining" subtotal row also reconciles column-wise against its four component rows. No misprints detected.

p. 229. This crop is the final page of a table continued from the preceding page: no column headings are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid has a stub plus 16 data columns, counted from the column rules and confirmed on every body row including the "Total, all industrial groups" line. The crop begins mid-section: the rows above "Water transportation" that feed the "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" subtotal (e.g. the railroad/trucking/local transit lines) are on the previous page, as are all earlier industry divisions that feed the grand total. Arithmetic check (not applied to any cell, only used to confirm column placement): the 13 component rows from "Hotels, rooming houses, camps, and other lodging places" through "Social services" sum exactly to the printed "Services" line in all 16 columns, which corroborates the column assignment across the full width, including the four narrow right-hand columns. Doubtful typography, not affecting values: in footnote 2 the punctuation after "Source" is faint in the scan and could be a colon or a period; it is rendered here as a colon. Several row labels show broken serifs on "i" (e.g. "Communication", "sanitary", "organizations") from the 1-bit scan, but the wording is unambiguous. The first column of the "Museums, art galleries, botanical and zoological gardens" row is 1 with zeros across to the last column, where a 1 is printed; both are legible.
