  1. 1 See Glossary for definitions of terms
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the 10 Standard Federal Administrative regions

842 of 843 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'Hawaii', column 2: prints 361, the subtotals in columns 3 to 16 add to 366; 'Region IX', column 16: prints 53, rows 'Arizona' to 'Nevada' add to 58.

Reader’s notes

p. 229. 16 columns. The stub heading carries a raised 2 and the caption a raised 1, but no footnote text is printed within this crop, so `footnotes` is empty; the notes presumably appear at the foot of the table on a later page. The crop is cut off after the Region IV total: a fresh horizontal rule and the start of the next region block (Region V) are visible at the bottom edge, so the table continues below. All cross-checks pass: for every state row All cases = All C + All R + UD + AC + UC, All C = CA+CB+CC+CD+CE+CP, All R = RC+RM+RD; and each Region subtotal equals the sum of its member states in all 15 numeric columns. No arithmetic discrepancies found. Doubtful glyphs (values themselves are confirmed by the totals): Massachusetts, RC column, shows a small stray apostrophe-like speck immediately after "326" — read as print debris, not a footnote marker, and transcribed as 326. Florida, CE column, has a comma-shaped speck to the left of the "1". Tennessee, CC column, and South Carolina, CC column, have similar specks before "17" and "0". In several row labels the dotted i ("Maine", "District of Columbia", "Georgia", "West Virginia") has a broken dot from the scan; the words are unambiguous.

p. 230. This crop is a continuation page: it begins mid-table with Illinois (Region V) and carries no column headings, so header_rows is empty. Regions I-IV and the caption/headings are on the preceding page. The grid has 16 columns (stub + 15 data columns), read off the vertical column rules. Arithmetic check: I summed every one of the 15 data columns within each of the six regional blocks against its printed "Region" subtotal. All 90 checks agree except one. In the last (15th) column, Region IX is printed as 53 while its member states as I read them (Arizona 3, California 47, Hawaii 8, Guam 0, Nevada 0) sum to 58. The discrepancy is exactly 5, which is consistent with either California's 47 actually being 42 or Hawaii's 8 actually being 3 in the printed source; I could not resolve the glyphs with certainty at this scan resolution and have transcribed them as they appear (47 and 8). Treat the last-column values for California and Hawaii as the doubtful cells. Region IX agrees with its member states in all 14 other columns, including the 14th column, where Hawaii's 11 is confirmed by the printed subtotal 18. Ohio, 13th data column: the value 19 is followed by a small stray ink mark that is not a digit or a footnote marker; the column sum (23+6+10+8+19+2 = 68) confirms the reading 19. A similar stray mark sits at the right end of footnote 2; it is not part of the text. Several state labels show broken dotted i's from the scan (Illinois, Louisiana, Missouri, Wyoming, Arizona, California, Administrative); the spellings are standard and have been written normally.
