Reader’s notes

p. 217. Structure: 8 columns (stub, Total, and six "Identification of Filing Party" columns). "Total" is a tall single heading spanning both heading levels; the stub has no printed heading. The six section lines (CA/CB/CC/CD/CE/CP cases) are centered band headings spanning the data columns and carry no values. The caption carries footnote marker 1 (excluded with the caption). DOUBTFUL CELLS — five glyphs read as "8" where the table's own arithmetic requires "3". All other cells satisfy both the row identity (six party columns sum to Total) and the column identity (Pending July 1 + Received = On docket; On docket - Closed = Pending June 30) exactly, so these five stand out. Because a 3 resolves every one of them, and four of the five sit in the same AFL-CIO unions column, I believe this is scan/render degradation of the digit 3 rather than five independent misprints; I have transcribed them as they appear, uncorrected: 1. CA cases, "Pending July 1, 1972", AFL-CIO unions: read "8,659". With 3,659 the row sums to the printed 6,905 and 3,659 + 7,275 = the printed 10,934 on docket; with 8,659 both identities miss by exactly 5,000. 2. CC cases, "Closed fiscal 1973", AFL-CIO unions: read "18". The row then sums to 1,785 against the printed total 1,780, and 15 on docket minus 18 closed is negative; 13 gives both the printed 1,780 and the printed pending of 2. 3. CD cases, "On docket fiscal 1973", AFL-CIO unions: read "82". Pending 9 + received 23 = 32, 32 - closed 27 = the printed pending 5, and the row sums to the printed 854 only with 32; with 82 the row sums to 904. 4. CE cases, "On docket fiscal 1973", AFL-CIO unions: read "8". Pending 0 + received 3 = 3, 3 - closed 2 = the printed pending 1, and the row sums to the printed 169 only with 3; with 8 it sums to 174. 5. CP cases, fourth data row: the row label reads "Closed fiscal 1978". Every other section prints "Closed fiscal 1973", and fiscal 1978 postdates this report, so the final digit is very likely a degraded 3 (or an original typo). Its values cross-check correctly. Stray handwritten pen/pencil marks appear in the scan and are not part of the table: a short tick left of "21" (CD cases, "Received fiscal 1973", Individuals), a small dash left of "18" (CD cases, "Closed fiscal 1973", Individuals), and marks over the leader dots in the CB block. None obscure a digit.
