Reader’s notes
p. 282. 23 columns: stub, two "Total" columns, then five disposition groups (Affirmed in full; Modified; Remanded in full; Affirmed in part and remanded in part; Set aside), each split into fiscal year 1972 and cumulative 1967-71, each of those into Number and Percent. The two "Total" columns and the stub are tall single headings spanning all three heading levels, so they are repeated down the levels. Verification: every one of the eleven Number columns sums exactly to its "Total all circuits" figure (341; 1,601; 239; 1,031; 39; 276; 16; 73; 5; 33; 42; 188), and each row's five disposition counts sum exactly to that row's total for both 1972 and the cumulative period. The integer grid is therefore solid. Percent cells are the least certain part of the transcription (last digit only). Recomputing number/row-total gives a value 0.1 away from what I read in six cells; these may be printed misprints or may be my misreading of the final digit at this resolution. They are transcribed exactly as I read them, not corrected: Boston affirmed-in-part cumulative percent, read 3.3 (computes 3.2); Philadelphia set-aside cumulative percent, read 10.7 (computes 10.8); New Orleans affirmed-in-full 1972 percent, read 80.4 (computes 80.3); Cincinnati affirmed-in-part cumulative percent, read 1.7 (computes 1.8); St. Louis set-aside cumulative percent, read 16.6 (computes 16.7); Washington remanded-in-full cumulative percent, read 8.2 (computes 8.1). Several percent cells are printed without a leading zero and are kept that way: Chicago affirmed-in-part cumulative ".7", Denver modified 1972 ".0", Washington set-aside 1972 ".0". In the San Francisco modified 1972 percent the decimal point is nearly lost in the scan, reading as "10 0"; it is transcribed "10.0", which matches 6/60. The San Francisco affirmed-in-full 1972 Number has a stray ink mark just before it in the scan (reads like an apostrophe); the value is 42, confirmed by both the row sum and the column sum, and the mark is treated as a scan artifact rather than a footnote marker. The last row is printed as "Washington, D.C." with no list number, unlike rows 1-10. The caption's footnote marker 1 sits on the caption, which is excluded per instructions.
