  1. 1 "Proceedings" are comparable to "cases" reported in annual reports prior to fiscal year 1964. This term more accurately describes the data inasmuch as a single "proceeding" often includes more than one "case." See "Glossary" for definitions of terms.
  2. 2 A proceeding in which the Board had entered an order dismissing the complaint and the charging party appealed such dismissal in the courts of appeals.
  3. 3 Supreme Court, also, decided N.L.R.B v. Nash-Finch Co., 404 U.S. 138, which held that the Board, as an agency of the United States, was immune from the limitations imposed by 28 U.S.C. 2283 on injunctions against state court proceedings.

56 of 56 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 281. Twelve columns: stub, five under "Number of proceedings" (Fiscal year 1972), four under "Percentages" (Fiscal year 1972), and two under the tall cumulative heading "July 5, 1935-June 30, 1972" (Number, Percent). The stub column carries no printed heading, so cell 0 of each heading level is empty. Doubtful cell: row "Remanded to Board" (first occurrence, under "On petitions for review and/or enforcement"), cumulative "Percent" column, prints as "4 3" with no visible decimal point. Elsewhere in this scan decimals are set with a space after the point ("67. 2", "13. 4"), so this reads as 4.3; the column also sums to 100.0 only with 4.3 (60.6+18.2+4.3+1.5+15.4). Transcribed as "4.3". Heading punctuation is inconsistent as printed and was kept verbatim: under "Number of proceedings" the headings read "Vs. employers only", "Vs unions only", "Vs both employers and unions" (no period after "Vs" in the latter two), while under "Percentages" all three read "Vs." with a period. Row label "Proceedings decided by U.S Supreme Court" is printed without a period after the second S (the first section head does print "U.S. courts of appeals"); kept as printed. Likewise footnote 3 prints "N.L.R.B" without a final period. Cells shown as a dash rule of leader dots in the percentage and cumulative columns are rendered as "". All printed zeros are kept as "0". Internal checks pass as printed: the five review/enforcement detail rows sum to 341, 268, 61, 0, 12 and to 5,049 cumulative; the three contempt rows sum to 21, 16, 3, 2, 0; the eight Supreme Court detail rows sum to 5, 4, 1, 0, 0. No misprints detected other than the faint decimal noted above.
