Final Outcome of Representation Elections in Cases Closed, Fiscal Year 1972

Local"), so the 3-union subtotal, any further sections (e.g. a part B) and the footnote texts for markers 1 and 2 are not on this image. Footnote marker 1 appears on the caption (excluded per instructions) and marker 2 on the "Total elections" column heading, but no footnote text is printed on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Last row, "Teamsters v. National v. Local", final column ("In elections where no representative chosen"): nothing is legible there — the row sits on the bottom edge of the crop and that cell reads as blank, so it is transcribed as "". Arithmetic implies it should read 0 (total 120 = 120 in elections won + 0), but it is not transcribed as such since it is not visible. Decimal points: the percent column is typeset with a space after the point ("50. 4"); these are written as "50.4". In two cells the point itself is lost in the scan and only a gap is visible — "Other local unions" row ("55 5") and "AFL-CIO v. AFL-CIO" row ("70 4"). Both are transcribed as "55.5" and "70.4" on the strength of the column pattern and the implied ratios (142/256 = 55.5, 107/152 = 70.4). Several digits are broken/filled in this 1-bit scan and were resolved by column arithmetic, all of which reconciles exactly against the printed "1-union elections" and "2-union elections" subtotals: 18,394 (AFL-CIO v. Teamsters, Employees total), 10,389 (AFL-CIO v. National, In units won by AFL-CIO unions), 6,393, 1,308, 853, 203, 20,623 and 273,665. Every printed subtotal in the table agrees with the sum of its component rows and columns; no misprint was found. Dashes ("------") in the breakdown columns mark unions not participating in that pairing and are transcribed as "". A printed 0 is kept as "0" and is distinct from those blanks. The centred section line "A. All representation elections" is carried as a label-only row.

p. 261. STRUCTURE: 16 columns. Three heading levels. "Participating unions" (stub), "Total elections^2", "Elections in which no representative chosen" and "In elections where no representative chosen" are tall headings occupying all three levels and are repeated down. "Elections won by unions" spans the 6 columns Percent won / Total won / AFL-CIO unions / Teamsters / Other national unions / Other local unions. "Employees eligible to vote" spans the 6 columns Total / In elections won / AFL-CIO unions / Teamsters / Other national unions / Other local unions; within it "In units won by" spans the last 4 of those. Note that the stub's four union categories (AFL-CIO unions, Teamsters, Other national unions, Other local unions) appear twice as sub-headings, once under "Elections won by unions" and once under "In units won by" — values must not be shifted between the two blocks. CROP: The first three rows continue section A from the preceding page; no section-A caption line appears on this image. The crop ends immediately after "AFL-CIO v. AFL-CIO v. Transcribed 83.8. - "AFL-CIO v. AFL-CIO v. Teamsters", column "Total elections^2": glyph reads like 8 but total won 2 + no representative chosen 1 = 3, and the printed percent won 66.7 equals 2/3. Transcribed 3. - "AFL-CIO v. AFL-CIO", column "Percent won": printed as "70 5"; the decimal point has dropped out of the scan. Transcribed 70.5 (105/149 = 70.5). VERIFICATION: Every other row was checked and is internally consistent — the four union-category columns sum to "Total won"; "Total elections" minus "Total won" equals "Elections in which no representative chosen"; "Percent won" equals won/total; the four "In units won by" columns sum to "In elections won"; and "Employees eligible to vote / Total" minus "In elections won" equals "In elections where no representative chosen". The subtotal rows "1-union elections" and "2-union elections" also equal the sums of their member rows in every column. No misprints beyond the doubtful glyphs listed above.

p. 262. Continuation crop: no column headings are printed on this image, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 16 columns (stub + 15 value columns), counted from the column rules and confirmed by the "Total RC elections" and "Total RM elections" lines. The crop opens mid-table inside the final block of section B (elections in RC cases): the rows above "3- (or more) union elections" that belong to that block, and all of the 1-union and 2-union blocks of section B, are on the preceding page. The centered line "C. Elections in RM cases" is transcribed as a label-only section row. Decimal points: in this 1-bit scan the period in the percent column drops out in several cells, which print as e.g. "100 0", "90 0", "36 2", "42 9", "0 0", "50 0", "75 0", "41 9". I have written them with the decimal point (100.0, 90.0, 36.2, 42.9, 0.0, 50.0, 75.0, 41.9), since every one of them equals column 3 / column 1 to one decimal place (e.g. 170/406 = 41.9, 75/207 = 36.2, 36/40 = 90.0). Similarly, the period after "v" drops out in a few row labels ("AFL-CIO v AFL-CIO v. National", "AFL-CIO v AFL-CIO v Local", "AFL-CIO v. National v Local"); these are written with "v." throughout, matching the table's convention. The two subtotal labels are printed differently and are transcribed as printed: "3- (or more) union elections" in section B versus "3 (or more)-union elections" in section C. "2-union elections" is printed with extra word spacing; written with a single space. No arithmetic was altered. As a check on column placement, every row cross-foots: columns 4-7 sum to column 3, column 3 + column 8 = column 1, columns 11-14 sum to column 10, and column 10 + column 15 = column 9; all subtotal and total rows also sum down their blocks. No footnotes are printed under the table on this crop. A small stray ink mark sits in the blank area right of the "C. Elections in RM cases" heading and another at the far right edge beside the "Other local unions" row; both are specks, not characters.

p. 263. This crop is a continuation page ("—Con.") carrying only panel D of the table; panels A-C are on earlier pages. The table is a single panel 16 columns wide (stub + 15). Blank-looking cells in the body are printed as dash rules (------), which I have transcribed as "" per instruction; printed zeros are kept as 0. Faint/dropped decimal points in the "Percent won" column: the scan shows "32 4" (row "Other national unions"), "50 0" (row "AFL-CIO v. National") and "100 0" (row "Teamsters v. National"). In each case the gap is a decimal point that did not survive the scan, and the surrounding rows all print one decimal place; I transcribed them as 32.4, 50.0 and 100.0. Row "National v. Local", column "Employees eligible to vote / Total": printed as ".118" with a stray leading dot (a leader-dot artifact, not a footnote marker or decimal). Transcribed as 118, which is consistent with the 2-union elections subtotal. The footnote marker on the "Total elections" column heading is a small raised digit that reads ambiguously as 2 or 3 in this scan; since only footnotes 1 and 2 are printed under the table, I recorded it as ^2. Arithmetic cross-checks: every subtotal row (1-union, 2-union, 3 (or more)-union) and the "Total RD elections" row foots exactly against its detail rows in all 15 numeric columns, and the percent-won figures agree with Total won / Total elections. No misprints detected.
