  1. 1 Sec. 8(a)(3) of the Act requires that to revoke a union-shop agreement, a majority of the employees eligible to vote must vote in favor of deauthorization.

30 of 30 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 259. 15 columns. The table has four heading levels: the stub, "Total" (polls), "Total eligible", "Total" and "Percent of total eligible" (valid votes cast) are tall single headings repeated down the levels; "In polls" and "Cast for deauthorization" sit on the second level over their sub-columns. Doubtful cell: row "Teamsters", column "Valid votes cast / Percent of total eligible" reads 68.5 in the scan, but 774/1,113 = 69.5, and every other row in that column matches its computed value exactly (73.7, 74.9, 71.5). The glyph is an 8 or a 9; I transcribed what I read, 68.5. Nothing was computed or corrected. Row "Other local unions" prints a dash rule (------) in "Number of polls / Resulting in continued authorization / Percent of total" and in "Employees involved / In polls / Resulting in continued authorization / Percent of total"; both are given as "". The last column is headed "Percent of total eligible", but its values are percentages of valid votes cast, not of total eligible (1,602/4,536 = 35.3; 1,602/6,158 = 26.0). Transcribed as printed. Row label "AFL-CIO unions" is printed with an en-dash-like rule between AFL and CIO; written with a hyphen. All column totals and the component sums are internally consistent apart from the Teamsters cell noted above.
