  1. 1 See "Glossary" for definitions of terms. Data in this table are based on unfair labor practice cases that were closed during fiscal year 1972 after the company and/or union had satisfied all remedial action requirements.
  2. 2 A single case usually results in more than one remedial action; therefore, the total number of actions exceeds the number of cases involved.

96 of 223 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 4 cells break a sum: 'Backpay distributed', column 9: prints 156, columns 10 to 14 add to 173; 'From either employer or union', column 9: prints 271, columns 10 to 14 add to 292; 'From both employer and uinon', column 9: prints 81, columns 10 to 14 add to 84; 'C. By amounts of monetary reco', column 2: prints 6,570,960, rows 'Backpay (includes al' to 'Reimbursement of fee' add to 6,570,690.

Reader’s notes

p. 241. Grid is 14 columns: stub, "Total all", then the Employer block (Total; Informal settlement; Formal settlement; Recommendation of trial examiner; Board; Court) and the identical Union block. The heavy vertical rule before the Union "Total" separates the two blocks of one table, not two side-by-side panels; all rows share the single stub. Crop/coverage: only section "A. By number of cases involved" is on this image; the table continues past the bottom rule (a section B is implied but not shown), and the texts of footnote markers 1 (on the caption) and 2 (on 7,466) are not printed on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Doubtful cells: - "Collective bargaining begun", Union Total: the glyph is degraded and can be read as either 163 or 193; transcribed as 163 because the Union subcolumns sum to 156+0+0+4+3 = 163 and Total all minus Employer Total is 1,673-1,510 = 163. The middle digit of the Union "Informal settlement" cell in that row is the scan's distinctive 5-glyph, so 156 (not 186) there is firm. Worth a re-check against a higher-resolution scan. - "Backpay distributed" does not foot as transcribed: the Employer subcolumns (1,177+41+4+184+121) give 1,527 against the printed Employer Total 1,523, and the Union subcolumns (101+10+0+26+36) give 173 against the printed Union Total 156. The two printed totals are mutually consistent (1,523+156 = 1,679 = Total all), so one or more of the small subcolumn figures in that row is likely misread rather than the totals; the cells I am least sure of are Employer "Recommendation of trial examiner" (read 4) and Employer "Court" (read 121), and Union "Board" (read 26) and Union "Court" (read 36). All are transcribed as read. - "Notice posted": Total all 3,488 is 52 less than Employer Total plus Union Total (2,361+1,179 = 3,540). Transcribed as printed; this is the only row with such an overlap, every other two-block row sums exactly. Every other row foots exactly, both within each block and across Total all. The row label printed as "Obiections to employment withdrawn" (broken j in the scan) is transcribed "Objections to employment withdrawn". Hyphenated line breaks repaired in: "A. By number of cases involved", "Employees offered reinstatement", "Hiring hall rights restored", "Objections to employment withdrawn", "Other conditions of employment improved"; the hyphen in "Employer-dominated" is printed mid-line and kept. Dash-rule cells (the long dotted/dashed runs under the Union columns for employer-only remedies and vice versa) are "".

p. 242. Structure: this crop is the continuation page of a table begun on the preceding page, so no column headings are printed on it and header_rows is empty. The grid has 14 columns: the stub plus 13 data columns. From the internal arithmetic the data columns are clearly a grand total (col 1), an employer-cases total (col 2) with five employer subcolumns (cols 3-7), and a union-cases total (col 8) with five union subcolumns (cols 9-13); none of those headings is printed here, so none was reconstructed. First row label: the stub prints "B. By number of employees" / "affected Employees" / "offered reinstatement," / "total" — the section line "B. By number of employees affected" and the data line "Employees offered reinstatement, total" share the second printed line, so they form one printed row block with one set of values and are transcribed as one row. A reader who wants the usual sectioned form should split this into a value-less section line "B. By number of employees affected" and a data row "Employees offered reinstatement, total" carrying 3,555 etc. Printed typo: row 9's stub reads "From both employer and uinon" (letters transposed in "union"); transcribed as printed. The two section lines ending in a colon ("Employees receiving backpay:", "Employees reimbursed for fees, dues, and fines:") show a faint mark in the scan that is read as a colon. Empty cells: the blank cells in rows 1-4 (cols 8-13) and rows 5-6 (cols 2-7) are printed as dash rules, entered as "". Arithmetic discrepancies, all transcribed as printed: - "Employees offered reinstatement, total", cols 6 and 7: Accepted + Declined gives 188+151=339 against the printed total 338, and 345+338=683 against the printed total 684. The two errors offset, so the row total 3,555 and all other columns add exactly. These are the two cells I would most suspect of a misread (338 could be 339, 684 could be 683); the characters are transcribed as they appear. - Row 8 ("From either employer or union", backpay), col 8: printed 271, while cols 9-13 sum to 292. Col 8 is corroborated by col 1 minus col 2 (6,093 - 5,822 = 271), so the excess sits in the union subcolumns. - Row 9 ("From both employer and uinon"): col 2 printed 51 against cols 3-7 summing to 62, and col 8 printed 81 against cols 9-13 summing to 84; col 1 (132) equals col 2 + col 8. Double counting of cases falling under more than one subsection is the likely explanation for rows 8 and 9. - Row 14 (Backpay), col 2: printed 6,141,790 while cols 3-7 sum to 6,142,790 (1,000 high). The printed 6,141,790 is corroborated twice — it plus col 8 (306,850) gives the printed col 1 of 6,448,640, and it plus the Reimbursement row's 66,360 gives the printed C-total col 2 of 6,208,150 — so the same 1,000 gap reappears in row 13 col 2 (printed 6,208,150 against cols 3-7 summing to 6,209,150). - Row 13 ("C. By amounts of monetary recovery, total"), col 1: printed $6,570,960, but its own two subrows give 6,448,640 + 122,050 = 6,570,690, and col 2 + col 8 gives 6,208,150 + 362,540 = 6,570,690. The printed figure looks like a 690/960 transposition; the cell is transcribed as read. Every other subcolumn in section C checks exactly (each C-total cell equals Backpay + Reimbursement in that column), which supports the digit readings there. The caption, the "—Continued" line, the rotated running head "Appendix" in the right margin and the page number are omitted as instructed.
