746 of 769 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 1 cell breaks a sum: 'Manufacturing', column 17: prints 164,612, rows 'Ordance and accessor' to 'Miscellaneous manufa' add to 169,612.

Reader’s notes

p. 198. The crop cuts the table off after the "Primary metal industries" row; the table continues on the page below the crop, so later industry rows and any total line are not shown. The stub heading carries a raised footnote marker 1 ("Industrial group ^1"), but the footnote text itself falls below the crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Two row labels are transcribed exactly as printed and appear to be typographic defects in the original: row 1 reads "Ordance and accessories" (the standard SIC wording is "Ordnance and accessories" — the "n" is absent/broken in this impression), and row 5 reads "Apparel an other finished products made from fabric and similar materials" (the "d" of "and" is absent/broken). Column placement was cross-checked by arithmetic on all 15 rows and every row is internally consistent: the AFL-CIO/Teamsters/other-national/other-local election counts sum to the "Total" won by unions; that total plus "no representative was chosen" equals "Total elections"; the four union vote columns sum to "Valid votes cast for unions: Total"; and that total plus "Total votes for no union" equals "Total valid votes cast". No printed value appeared to be a misprint. A vertical running head "Appendix A" is printed in the right margin outside the table rules and is excluded, as are the caption lines.

p. 199. This is a continuation page ("—Continued") of Table 16; the industrial-group list begins on an earlier page, so the "Manufacturing" and "Mining" lines here are subtotals that also cover rows printed before this crop (the eight manufacturing detail rows shown above "Manufacturing" are only the tail of that group, so "Manufacturing" is much larger than their sum, as expected). The stub heading carries a raised footnote marker ("Industrial group ^1"), but no footnote text is printed on this page; the footnote presumably appears on the table's first page. The table is cut off at the bottom after "Construction" — further industry groups continue on the next page. Printed arithmetic is internally consistent throughout: in every row the union-detail columns sum to their "Total" column, "Total elections" equals won-by-unions plus no-representative-chosen, "Total valid votes cast" equals union votes plus votes for no union, and the "Mining" line equals the sum of its four member rows. Minor reading notes: in the "Coal mining" row the "Total" won-by-unions value is printed with a stray leading mark (reads 15), and the "Miscellaneous transportation equipment" row has a stray ink speck before the "Total elections" value and before "48" in the AFL-CIO column; neither is a footnote marker.

p. 200. The crop is a continuation page: no column headings are printed on this image, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 17 columns (stub plus 16 numeric), counted from the column rules and confirmed by the data. Arithmetic cross-checks all pass, which strongly corroborates the column assignment: in every data row, columns 3-7 sum to column 1 (e.g. Wholesale trade 75+281+28+12+334 = 730; Communications 82+4+1+7+61 = 155). The two subtotal rows reconcile exactly in all 16 numeric columns against their member rows printed above them — "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" against the six transportation/utility rows, and "Services" against the eight service rows. The "Total, all industrial groups" row satisfies the same cols 3-7 = col 1 identity (2,453+1,349+418+225+3,917 = 8,362), but its remaining columns cannot be checked here because they also aggregate rows printed on the preceding page. The first three rows (Wholesale trade, Retail trade, Finance insurance and real estate) belong to sections whose subtotal rows fall on the preceding page, so they are validated only by the cols 3-7 = col 1 identity, which holds for each. Doubtful/incidental marks: in Retail trade, column 9 ("41,913") there is a small stray tick immediately to the right of the value, against the column rule; it reads as a scan artifact rather than a footnote marker, and the value is transcribed as 41,913. In Nonprofit membership organizations, column 7 ("3") a small speck sits just above the digit; again read as an artifact, and the sum check (5+0+0+1+3 = 9) confirms the value is 3. In Communications, column 4 ("4") a faint vertical tick appears to the right of the digit, likewise read as an artifact. No footnote markers are attached to any value or row label on this image. The single footnote rule and source note at the foot of the page are reproduced in footnotes. Several row labels were printed broken across two or three lines and have been joined, repairing end-of-line hyphens: "commu-nication" to "communication", "orga-nizations" to "organizations".
