752 of 752 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 199. 17 columns. The stub heading carries footnote marker 1 ("Industrial group 1"), but no footnote text is printed on this crop; it presumably appears at the end of the table on a later page, so `footnotes` is empty. The crop is the first panel/page of the table: it ends with the "Manufacturing" subtotal under a double rule. The nonmanufacturing industry groups and the grand total continue on the following page and are not on this image. Internal consistency (used only as a read check; nothing was computed into cells): for every one of the 22 industry rows the printed parts sum to the printed totals (won + no-representative = total elections; the four union columns = union total; union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes), and every one of the 16 numeric columns sums exactly to the printed "Manufacturing" line. No misprint detected. Row-label observation: the row between "Products of petroleum and coal" and "Stone, clay, and glass products" is printed "Leather and leather products", and there is no separate rubber/plastics row in the list. Since the column totals reconcile with exactly the 22 rows transcribed, no row is missing from the crop; the label is given as printed. "AFL-CIO" is set with a long hyphen in the headings and is transcribed with a plain hyphen. Row labels wrapping over two or three printed lines (Apparel; Lumber and wood products; Printing, publishing; Fabricated metal products; Electrical machinery; Ship and boat building; Miscellaneous transportation equipment; Professional, scientific) have been joined into single labels. The small superscript-looking "1" after "Industrial group" is treated as a footnote marker, not text.

p. 200. Continuation page: no column headings are printed on this crop, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 17 columns (stub plus 16 data columns), counted from the column rules and confirmed by the full-width "Total, all industrial groups" row. Arithmetic check (no values were altered): all three printed subtotal rows cross-foot exactly against their member rows in every one of the 16 data columns — "Mining" over its 4 members, "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" over its 6 members, and "Services" over its 8 members. This independently confirms the digit readings and the column assignment for 18 of the 26 rows. The block between the double rules that holds "Wholesale trade", "Retail trade" and "Finance, insurance, and real estate" has NO subtotal row printed, unlike the Mining, Transportation and Services blocks which each end in one. Nothing is cut off there and no row is omitted from this transcription — the block simply runs straight into the closing double rule. "Construction" stands alone between double rules and likewise has no subtotal. The "Total, all industrial groups" row cannot be verified here because the table's earlier industrial groups (presumably manufacturing) are on the preceding page, outside this crop. Scan artifacts, none of which obscure a value: a curved page-curl line crosses the "Metal mining" row near the column holding 368, and the leader-dot rules are broken in places. Faint-but-legible cells worth flagging: "Coal mining" reads 542 in column 13 and 285 in column 14 (the 5s are partly filled in this typeface), and "Metal mining" column 14 is a printed 0, not a blank — both are corroborated by the Mining subtotal cross-foot (180+542+0+15=737 and 0+285+16+10=311).
