  1. 1 See "Glossary" for definitions of terms.
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S Department of Commerce

829 of 830 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'Louisiana', column 2: prints 592, the subtotals in columns 3 to 16 add to 502; 'West South Central', column 2: prints 2,367, rows 'Arkansas' to 'Texas' add to 2,457.

Reader’s notes

p. 175. The crop shows only the first page of this table: the body breaks off immediately after the Virginia row (whose label is clipped at the bottom edge but whose figures are fully legible), so the remaining South Atlantic states, the later divisions, the grand total and any footnote block printed below the table are not on this image. The caption carries a raised footnote marker 1 and the stub heading carries a raised 2, but the corresponding footnote texts are not printed on this crop. Doubtful cell: Kansas, UC column (last). The cell reads as blank in the scan while every other UC entry in that division prints a figure, including explicit zeros. It is transcribed as empty. The printed West North Central UC subtotal of 18 equals the sum of the six other states in the division (2+5+7+0+0+4), and the Kansas row total of 234 is exactly accounted for by 134 + 99 + 0 + 1, so the missing value is 0 either way; the only question is whether a printed 0 dropped out of the scan. Michigan, CE column, reads 35, far above every other CE entry on the page (all 0 to 8). It is transcribed as printed and is confirmed by arithmetic: the Michigan All C figure of 1,081 requires it (730+212+72+19+35+13), and the East North Central CE subtotal of 38 equals 0+0+3+35+0. All other figures were cross-checked and are internally consistent as printed: for every state row the six CA-CP columns sum to All C, RC+RM+RD sums to All R, and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC sums to All cases; and each of the four division subtotal rows equals the sum of its member states in all fifteen numeric columns. No arithmetic discrepancy was found anywhere in the visible portion of the table. Column structure: 16 columns. The second heading level repeats the stub heading and All cases, which are tall single headings spanning both levels; the spanner headings Unfair labor practice cases (7 columns) and Representation cases (4 columns) are repeated across the columns they cover. The three rightmost headings were set with end-of-line hyphens (Union deau-thor-iza-tion, Amend-ment of certi-fica-tion, Unit clari-fica-tion) and have been rejoined.

p. 176. The crop is a continuation page: no column headings are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 16 columns (stub + 15 numeric), counted from the column rules and confirmed by the grand-total row. Doubtful cell: Louisiana, column 1 (the first numeric column). I read the printed digits as "592" and have transcribed them that way, but the arithmetic says the printed figure should be 502. Every other row on the page satisfies col1 = col2 + col9 + col13 + col14 + col15; for Louisiana that identity gives 337 + 160 + 0 + 1 + 4 = 502. The West South Central subtotal in column 1 (2,367) likewise equals 243 + 502 + 277 + 1,345, not 243 + 592 + ... = 2,457. So either the middle digit is a 0 that the scan renders like a 9, or the original is misprinted; I could not resolve it from the image. All 14 other columns of the Louisiana row and of the West South Central subtotal cross-check exactly. The South Atlantic subtotal (3,730 etc.) does not equal the sum of the five States shown, because the earlier States of that group (Delaware through Virginia) are printed on the preceding page, outside this crop. All other subtotals checked: East South Central, West South Central (except column 1 as noted), Mountain, Pacific, Outlying Areas, and the grand total all equal the sums of their member rows, and every row's internal identities (col2 = cols 3-8; col9 = cols 10-12) hold. There is a small stray ink speck in the Arizona row between the 13th and 14th numeric columns; it is not a digit or a footnote marker and is not transcribed. Arizona's 13th column is a printed 0. Footnote 2 is printed without a period after "U.S" and without a closing period; transcribed as printed.
