Reader’s notes

p. 230. 15 columns: stub plus three top-level panels (Number of polls, 5 cols; Employees involved, 5 cols; Valid votes cast, 4 cols). "Total" (col 1), "Total eligible" (col 6), "Total" (col 11) and "Percent of total eligible" (col 12) are tall single headings repeated down the heading levels. Faded decimal points: in several percent cells the printed decimal point is very light and reads almost as a blank space — "60 0" (Total, Number of polls / Resulting in deauthorization / Percent of total), "58 6" and "61 5" (AFL-CIO unions, Percent of total under Resulting in deauthorization and under Resulting in continued authorization in the Employees-involved panel), "78 2" (Teamsters, Employees involved / Resulting in continued authorization / Percent of total), and "100 0" (Other local unions, Number of polls / Resulting in deauthorization / Percent of total). All are transcribed with the decimal point (60.0, 58.6, 61.5, 78.2, 100.0); each is confirmed by the arithmetic of its own row. Dash rules: in the "Other local unions" row the two "Percent of total" cells for Resulting in continued authorization (columns 5 and 10) hold a dash rule ("---") and are transcribed as "". The stub heading reads "Affiliation of union holding union-shop contract" (hyphenated line break "uniōn-shop" repaired). The column heading "Total eli-gible" is joined to "Total eligible". All row sums and percentages in the body are internally consistent with the printed Total row; no suspected misprints. Nothing appears cut off by the crop; the footnote line, which wraps ("deauthoriza-/tion."), is complete.
