648 of 648 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 215. The crop is the first page of a multi-page table; it ends mid-row. The last row shown, "Professional, scientific, and controlling in-", has only its first two printed label lines visible (the word is broken at an end-of-line hyphen and the rest of the label plus all of its 15 data values fall below the crop), so its value cells are left empty. No footnote texts are printed on this crop, although footnote markers 1 (caption) and 2 (stub heading "Industrial group") are present; the footnote block presumably appears on a later page of the table. Column-span judgment: the CP column was placed under the "Unfair labor practice cases" spanner rather than under "Representation cases". The two spanner headings are centered slightly left of their true column spans, making the boundary visually ambiguous, but the arithmetic resolves it — in every row "All C cases" equals CA+CB+CC+CD+CE+CP (e.g. Food and kindred products: 665+214+45+7+3+8 = 942) and "All R cases" equals RC+RM+RD (637+64+41 = 742). Doubtful cells: - "Tobacco manufacturers", RM column: the glyph is broken/blotted in the scan and could be read as a damaged 9. Transcribed as 0, which is what the row requires (All R cases 6 = RC 6 + RM + RD 0, and All cases 14 = 8 + 6). - "Automotive and other transportation equipment", UC column: the digit is ambiguous between 3 and 8 at this scan resolution. Transcribed as 3, consistent with All cases 837 = 550 + 272 + 6 + 6 + 3. Apart from those two glyphs, all 21 complete rows cross-foot exactly (component C types to All C cases, component R types to All R cases, and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC to All cases), so no misprints are apparent. Row labels are printed with leader dots, which have been dropped; multi-line labels have been joined and end-of-line hyphens repaired (e.g. "fin-ished" to "finished", "sim-ilar" to "similar", "equip-ment" to "equipment", "sup-plies" to "supplies"). Spanner headings set in stacked broken form were likewise joined: "Union deau-thoriza-tion cases", "Amend-ment of certifica-tion cases", "Unit clarifi-cation cases".

p. 216. Continuation page: no column headings are printed on this crop, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 16 columns (stub + 15 numeric), counted from the column rules and confirmed by every body row. Row 1 is cut off at the top of the crop: only the second line of its label, "struments", is printed here (the first line, carrying the hyphenated start of the word, falls on the preceding page). Transcribed exactly as printed rather than reconstructed. Doubtful cell: "Miscellaneous Manufacturing", last (15th) numeric column — the glyph reads as 3 or 8; I transcribed 3. It cannot be checked arithmetically because the Manufacturing subtotal also covers rows above the crop. No other cell on the page is in doubt. Arithmetic check (not used to alter any transcribed value): all 15 numeric columns of the "Total, all industrial groups" row equal the sum of the eight major-group subtotals (Manufacturing, Mining, Construction, Wholesale trade, Retail trade, Finance, Transportation, Services). The Mining, Transportation, and Services subtotals also equal the sums of their printed component rows in all 15 columns. The Manufacturing subtotal could not be verified because most of its components are on the previous page. No misprint found. Scanner artifacts in the stub (dotless "i" in "Communications", "Mining", "quarrying", "freight", "Educational", "Nonprofit", "services") are rendering noise, not variant spellings; the words are transcribed normally. End-of-line hyphens repaired in "Manufac-turing", "trans-portation", "warehous-ing", "recre-ation".
