  1. 1 See "Glossary" for definitions of terms. Data in this table are based upon unfair labor practice cases that were closed during fiscal year 1968 after the company and/or union had satisfied all remedial action requirements.
  2. 2 A single case usually results in more than one remedial action, therefore, the total number of actions exceeds the number of cases involved.

231 of 234 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 3 cells break a sum: 'A. By number of cases involved', column 2: prints 5,674, the subtotals in columns 3 to 9 add to 0; 'From both employer and union', column 2: prints 16, the subtotals in columns 3 to 9 add to 32; 'From both employer and union', column 2: prints 127, the subtotals in columns 3 to 9 add to 254.

Reader’s notes

p. 219. 14 columns: stub, "Total all", then six Employer columns and six Union columns, separated by the double rule in the middle of the page. Section "A. By number of cases involved" carries only the "Total all" figure, printed as a raised 2 followed by 5,674; transcribed as 5,674^2. Cells left empty in the body are printed as dotted leader rules (e.g. the Employer block for "Hiring hall rights restored" through "Work stoppage ended", and the Union block for the four rows from "Recognition or other assistance withdrawn" through "Employees placed on preferential hiring list"). The crop is cut off at the bottom: the line "See footnotes at end of table." appears below the last body row (partly clipped), and the table continues on a following page with section B. No numbered footnotes are printed on this image, so `footnotes` is empty. The caption's footnote marker 1 is on the excluded caption line. Scan artifacts: the heading printed "Ordei of—" and several labels show broken dots (e.g. "Actıon taken", "Recom- menda- tıon of trıal ex- amıner"); these are rendered as "Order of—", "Action taken" and "Recommendation of trial examiner". All row and column sums in the body check out against the printed totals, which supports the column assignments.

p. 220. Continuation page: no column headings are printed on this crop (the table's headings are on the preceding page), so header_rows is empty. The grid has 14 columns: the stub plus 13 numeric columns, with a heavy double vertical rule between numeric columns 7 and 8 separating the two column groups (the left group's figures correspond to the employer-respondent headings, the right group to the union-respondent headings on the previous page); column 1 is the combined "all cases" column. Row label doubt: the second row reads to me as "Employers offered reinstatement, total". Because it sits under section "B. By number of employees affected" and its two sub-rows are Accepted/Declined, the printed word is very likely "Employees"; I transcribed the glyphs as they appear rather than correcting them. Flag this cell for review. Cells shown as a dashed/dot rule are transcribed as "": the entire right-hand group (columns 8-13) for "Employers offered reinstatement, total", "Accepted", "Declined" and "Employees placed on preferential hiring list"; and columns 2-7 for "Hiring hall rights restored" and "Objections to employment withdrawn". "Employees receiving backpay" and "Employees reimbursed for fees, dues, and fines" are label-only caption lines over their two "From either ..." / "From both ..." sub-rows, so all their value cells are "". A small stray ink tick sits in the white space just above "$3,147,090" in the "C. By amounts of monetary recovery, total" row; it is scanner/press dirt, not a footnote marker, and was not transcribed. There is a similar speck above the top rule near the stub. Footnote punctuation is indistinct in this 1-bit scan: the mark after "definitions of terms" in footnote 1 and the mark after "more than one remedial action" in footnote 2 each render as a single dot. I read the first as a period and the second as a comma (the following "therefore" is lowercase); either could be the other. The last line of footnote 1 ("union had satisfied all remedial action requirements") is clipped by the bottom edge of the crop, so its closing period is inferred rather than seen. Arithmetic check (not written into any cell): every panel reconciles as printed - the five detail columns sum to each group's subtotal, and column 1 equals the two group subtotals added, for all value rows including the dollar rows. No suspected numeric misprints.
