  1. 1 See table 8 for summary of disposition by stage. See "Glossary" for definition of terms.
  2. 2 CD cases closed in this stage are processed as jurisdictional disputes under sec. 10(k) of the Act. See table 7A.

182 of 182 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 241. 16 columns: stub + 3 for "All C cases" (Number, Percent of total closed, Percent of total method) + 2 each (Number, Percent of total closed) for CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CP. Crop is incomplete at the bottom: the body ends after "Board decision" with an empty ruled band, and the table clearly continues (the "Compliance with" group totals 877 but only 143 + 454 = 597 is shown here). No footnote texts appear on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty even though the caption carries a raised 1 and one body cell carries a reference to footnote 2. Decimal points: in this 1-bit scan many percent values print with the period dropped out, leaving a gap ("100 0", "27 2", "15 1", "5 4", "3 8", "0 3"). All such cells are single-decimal percentages and have been written with the decimal point restored (100.0, 27.2, 15.1, 5.4, 3.8, 0.3). The affected cells are scattered through every percent column; none was ambiguous as to digit values, only as to the faint period. Doubtful / odd cells: - "Before issuance of complaint", CD cases Number: the cell holds only a parenthesised raised 2, i.e. a reference to footnote 2 standing in place of a value; transcribed literally as "(2)". Every other CD Number cell in the body is a printed 0, so this cell is genuinely different, not a misread 0. - "After hearing opened", All C cases Percent of total closed: printed "1.1". This looks like a misprint for 0.1 (19 of 16,360 = 0.12 percent, and the parallel CA cell is 0.1), but it is transcribed as printed. - "After hearing opened, before issuance of trial examiner's dicision": the stub reads "dicision" on the page, a misprint for "decision"; kept as printed. - "Formal settlement" is printed with a period before its leader dots; the period is treated as part of the leader run and dropped. Internal arithmetic otherwise checks out (column totals sum to 16,360; informal + formal = agreement in every column; the sub-items sum to their group lines), which supports the digit readings. Two percentages in the All C "Percent of total closed" column sit 0.1 above a recomputation (19.5 for 3,171/16,360 and 24.9 for 4,058/16,360); these are transcribed as printed and not corrected.

p. 242. CONTINUATION PAGE: no column headings are printed on this crop, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 16 columns: the stub plus 15 numeric columns. From the column rules and arithmetic the 15 are a three-column total block (count; percent of all cases closed; percent within the disposition group, which reads 100.0 on the "Withdrawal" and "Dismissal" lines) followed by six count/percent pairs, one per case type. The crop also cuts off the top of the table: the first four rows are sub-items of a disposition heading (and a "Board order"/"Board decision" sub-heading) that appears on the preceding page. DECIMAL POINTS: this 1-bit scan drops the period in many percent cells, which print as e.g. "0 4", "100 0", "27 5", "11 3", "40 1", "35 8", "0 0". All such cells sit in one-decimal percent columns and have been transcribed with the decimal point restored (0.4, 100.0, 27.5, 11.3, 40.1, 35.8, 0.0). No other normalization was done. ARITHMETIC CHECKS: every count row sums across the six case-type columns to its printed total, and the "Withdrawal" (6,153) and "Dismissal" (4,589) blocks sum down correctly in all seven columns, so the column assignment is well anchored. DOUBTFUL CELLS: - Row "After hearing opened, before trial examiner's decision" (the Dismissal block one, total 8), second case-type count column: the glyph is degraded and reads to me more like 5 than 0, but 5 is impossible — the row would sum to 13 instead of 8, the column would sum to 1,186 instead of the printed Dismissal figure of 1,181 (1,134+5+0+1+38+3+0), and the matching percent cell holds a dash rule, which in this table always accompanies a 0. Transcribed as 0. - Row "Contested" (the first one, count 392), fourth case-type percent column: reads 0.4 as printed, but 36 cases against a column base of about 1,363 is roughly 2.6 percent, and the line above shows 0.7 for only 9 cases. Either a misprint in the original or a 2.6 degraded in the scan; left as printed. - Row "By Supreme Court action", first case-type percent column: reads 0.7 as printed, but 18 cases against a column base of about 10,817 is roughly 0.2 percent. The line above shows 0.2 for 27 cases. Possible misprint, or a 2 degraded into a 7; left as printed. - The two "Before issuance of complaint" rows carry a parenthesised superscript 2 in place of a value in the fourth case-type count column (the CD column, per footnote 2); transcribed as "(2)". - Last row, fourth case-type count column: a small stray mark sits just above and left of the 0. It does not match any footnote marker used in this table and looks like scanning debris or broken type, so it was not transcribed. - A stray ink/pen mark sits in the top margin above the table, outside any cell. - Blank cells here are either genuinely empty or hold a dash rule; both are rendered as "".
