- 1 "Proceedings" are comparable to "cases" reported in annual reports prior to fiscal year 1964. This term more accurately describes the data inasmuch as a single "proceeding" often includes more than one "case." See "Glossary" for definition of terms.
- 2 A proceeding in which the Board had entered an order dismissing the complaint and the charging party appealed such dismissal in the court of appeals.
- 3 The Supreme Court remanded three additional cases, not included in this table, to circuit courts of appeals. These cases involved not the enforcement or review of Board orders, but the rights of parties to intervene in proceedings in the circuit courts of appeals: International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America, Local 283 v. Fafnir Bearing Co., 382 U.S. 205, UAW v. Scofield, id., I.U.E. v. N.L.R.B., 382 U.S. 366. In addition, the Board appeared as amicus curiae in two preemption cases: Hanna Mining Co., et al. v. District 2, Marine Engineers Beneficial Association, AFL-CIO, et al., 382 U.S. 181, and Linn v. United Plant Guard Workers of America, Local 114, 383 U.S. 53. Its position was sustained by the Court in both cases.

p. 235. Twelve columns: stub, then five "Number of proceedings" columns and four "Percentages" columns under "Fiscal year 1966", then "Number" and "Percent" under "July 5, 1935-June 30, 1966". The stub has no printed heading, so cell 0 of each heading level is empty. Period rendering: this scan reproduces most full stops as blank space, so decimal points in the percentage columns appear as gaps ("100 0", "54 4", "17 3") and initials appear as "U S". A few periods survive ("22.2", "3.9", "1.3", "61.3", "8.1"), confirming the typesetting is one decimal place throughout. I have restored the decimal points and the periods in "U.S." accordingly; no digits were changed. "Vs" in the column headings shows no period in the scan and is left as printed. Rounding checks (transcribed as printed, not corrected): "Board orders set aside", Percentages/Vs employers only reads 18.2, but 33/182 = 18.1; the column then sums to 100.0. Same row, Percent (cumulative) reads 17.3, but 550/3,162 = 17.4; that column then sums to 100.0. The cumulative percent column under "Proceedings decided by U.S. Supreme Court" sums to 100.1 against the printed total of 100.0. All count columns add correctly. Cells left empty hold a dashed rule in the original (no value), e.g. the whole percentage and cumulative block on the "Proceedings decided by U.S. courts of appeals" line, the "Vs both employers and unions" percentage for "Board orders affirmed with modification", and the "Board dismissal" count for the contempt rows and the last two Supreme Court rows. Footnote 3: the case name read as "Fafnir Bearing Co." is printed indistinctly (it scans closer to "Fanir"); I have given the legible reading. Italics in that footnote are not carried into the text.
