Final Outcome of Representation Elections in Cases Closed, Fiscal Year 1966

SCAN QUALITY: this is a coarse 1-bit scan in which 6 is frequently rendered as 0 and 3 as 8. Where a glyph was ambiguous I used the table's own row and column arithmetic (which is internally consistent everywhere it can be checked) to settle the digit. Teamsters v. Natl.", In elections won: reads like "930"; transcribed 936 (990 - 54 = 936, with 54 the printed last column). - "AFL-CIO v. Teamsters v. Natl.", In units won by / AFL-CIO unions: reads like "803"; transcribed 363 (363 + 330 + 243 = 936). Lower confidence than the others: the alternative split 303 + 390 + 243 also sums to 936, so this cell and the adjacent Teamsters cell (330) should be re-checked against a higher-resolution scan. - Smaller, arithmetically certain ones: "Teamsters v. Local" Total won (prints like "20", is 29), "AFL-CIO v. AFL-CIO" Percent won (prints like "60.9", is 69.9 = 144/206), "AFL-CIO v. Natl." AFL-CIO unions (prints like "08", is 98), "AFL-CIO v. AFL-CIO v. Teamsters" Employees Total (prints like "024", is 624). ROW LABEL: the "3 (or more)-union elections" stub prints as "8 (or more)" in this scan; it is 3, following the 1-union and 2-union sections and heading the three-way matchups. HEADING MARKER: the raised character on the "Total elections" column heading could be a 2 or a 3; transcribed as ^2 on the assumption it follows the caption's marker 1. The footnote text itself is below the crop and cannot confirm it. VERIFICATION: all other cells cross-foot. Component union columns sum to "Total won" and to "In elections won" on every row; "Total" minus "In elections won" equals the last column on every row; the three section rows (1-union, 2-union, 3-or-more) sum to "Total representation elections" in all 15 numeric columns; and every "Percent won" matches Total won / Total elections. No printed figure appears to be in error. The "A. ALL REPRESENTATION ELECTIONS" line is printed in full capitals (spaced small caps) spanning the table width and is transcribed as a label-only row.

p. 220. Crop continues a table from the preceding page: no column headings are printed, so header_rows is empty. The first six rows are the tail of the preceding section (panel A, evidently "elections in all cases"); its earlier rows and its stub/column headings are not on this image. The grid has 16 columns (stub + 15). From the arithmetic the 15 columns are: number of elections; percent won by unions; elections won by unions; won by AFL-CIO; by Teamsters; by other national; by other local; elections lost by unions; valid votes cast; votes for unions; for AFL-CIO; for Teamsters; for other national; for other local; votes against unions (every subtotal and cross-total in panel B adds exactly under this reading). Percent column: the decimal point is faint or lost in the scan on many lines (printed as "100 0", "59 7", "85 8", "93 4", "77 8", etc.). These are transcribed with the decimal point (100.0, 59.7, ...), matching the lines where the point is legible (62.3, 70.3, 85.9, 59.4, 100.0) and the computed ratios. DOUBTFUL CELLS — top panel rows 3 and 4 ("Teamsters v. Natl. v. Local" and "Teamsters v. Local v Local"): these two lines are tightly spaced and the small digits and dash rules in the "won by" columns (AFL-CIO/Teamsters/Natl/Local) and in the "votes for other national" column could not be assigned between the two lines with certainty at the resolution available. My raw visual impression was "Teamsters v. Natl. v. Local" = (—, 1, —, 0, 0 | —, 0, —, 161, 0) and "Teamsters v. Local v Local" = (—, 0, 0, 1, 0 | —, 50, 0, 0, 0), but that reading violates the table's own conventions three ways: a dash is printed wherever a union type is not in the contest (so the Natl cells cannot be dashed on the "v. Natl. v." line, nor filled on the "Local v Local" line); each of these is a single election, so the one win must go to the union holding the votes; and panel B's identical row "Teamsters v. Local v Local" (verified against the 3-union subtotals) reads (—, 1, —, 0, 0 | —, 50, —, 0, 0). I therefore transcribed the two lines as the convention, the row arithmetic and panel B require. These eight cells should be checked against the original page. Other reading notes: the third label under "3 (or more)-union elections" renders as "AFL-CIO v. AFI-CIO v. Natl" because of a broken L; transcribed as AFL-CIO. The "v." abbreviation appears inconsistently with and without its period (the same combination "AFL-CIO v. Teamsters v Local" shows one pattern in the top panel and "AFL-CIO v. Teamsters v. Local" in panel B); labels are transcribed as the periods appear on this image, so some may be scan dropouts. Dash rules ("------") are transcribed as empty cells; printed zeros are kept as 0. "B. ELECTIONS IN RC CASES" is printed centered across the full table width between the two panels and is given as a label-only row.

p. 221. 16 columns. The crop is a continuation page ("—Continued"); the column headings are reprinted, so they are given. No footnote text appears on this crop, although markers ^1 (in the caption, omitted) and ^2 (on "Total elections") are printed. "Percent won" column: the decimal point is not resolved in this 1-bit scan, so the cells read "51 3", "44 8", "100 0", etc. I have transcribed them with the decimal point ("51.3", "44.8", "100.0"), since every value is a one-decimal percentage that matches won/total (e.g. 239/466 = 51.3, 56/74 = 75.7). Cells printed as a dash rule ("------") — the "not applicable" filler in the union-breakdown columns — are transcribed as "". Row labels: faint periods make the abbreviations inconsistent on the page. I read "AFL-CIO v. Natl" (no clear abbreviation period before the leader dashes), "AFL-CIO v Local", "AFL-CIO v. Teamsters v Natl" and "Teamsters v Natl v. Local" with "v" unpunctuated where the period does not appear; these are plausibly "v." / "Natl." in the original printing. "3 (or more)-union elections" is set tight and may be printed without the space after "3". All printed rows are internally consistent (component columns sum to the totals, and the three sub-sections sum to the "Total RM elections" line), so no misprints are suspected.

p. 222. No column headings are printed on this crop — it is the continuation panel of a table whose headings appear on an earlier page — so header_rows is empty. The grid has 16 columns (stub + 15 data columns), counted from the column rules; column assignment for rows with empty cells was taken from the printed rule positions. "D. ELECTIONS IN RD CASES" is printed centered above the table's top rule rather than in the stub; it is transcribed as a label-only section row. Column 2 is a one-decimal percent column. In this 1-bit scan the decimal points do not resolve, so the cells read as "29 0", "24 2", "28 2", "17 9", "0 0", "100 0"; they are transcribed with the decimal point ("29.0", etc.). No misprint detected. A small stray ink speck sits just below the "0" in the col-8 cell of the "3 (or more)-union elections" row; read as printer noise, not a footnote marker or decimal point.
