Reader’s notes

p. 37. The crop is Chart 14 ("Cases Closed"), a stacked bar chart whose data are printed as a small table below the plot; only that data table is transcribed. The chart's own y-axis scale labels (0 through 33,000, headed "CASES") and the bar shading are graphic elements and are not part of the grid. The stub cells for the two data rows are preceded by legend swatches (a solid black patch for "C CASES" and a horizontally striped patch for the second row); these are symbols, not text, and are omitted. The second row label is printed over two lines as "R, UD. AC,&" / "UC CASES"; the mark after "UD" is almost certainly a comma degraded in the scan, so it is transcribed as "R, UD, AC, & UC CASES". The 1958 column heading and its two data values sit slightly left of the other columns because the stub legend text runs into the column area, but the alignment with 1958 is unambiguous. A stray speck follows "1962" in the heading row; it is scan dirt, not a footnote marker. All three columns' arithmetic is internally consistent (each year's two components sum to the printed total), which supports the digit readings.
