Reader’s notes

p. 198. Scope: the crop shows only the 10(l) part of Table 20 (section lines "10(l)", "8(b)(4)(A)", "8(b)(4)(B)", all printed in italic). No 10(j) section appears on this image, so the table evidently continues on a following page. The footnote line is clipped along the bottom edge of the crop but is legible. Asterisks: the asterisk that follows many union names is the marker for the footnote at the foot of the table, so it is written behind a caret (e.g. "Teamsters, Local 559^*"). These asterisks sit on the baseline rather than raised, but they are footnote references, not part of the union name. Punctuation: this is a 1-bit scan in which periods after abbreviations (Inc., Corp., Co., and personal initials) are frequently faint or absorbed into the leader dots that follow the entry. They have been transcribed in the standard printed form; individual periods, especially trailing ones before leaders, are not individually verifiable at this resolution. A few union entries do carry a visible sentence period inside the cell ("Bridge Structural Iron Local 167.", "Electrical Workers, IBEW, Local 861." for 15-CC-181, "Ladies Garment Workers, Local 102."), and those are kept. Doubtful cells: - Case No. column, row "Old Dutch Farms, Inc.": the leading pair of digits images as "92", giving "92-CC-800". 92 is not an NLRB regional number, the respondent is a New York dairy and the union is Teamsters Local 584 (New York), so this is almost certainly region 02 and has been transcribed "02-CC-800". Flagging it because the character as inked does read 9. - Case No. column, row "J. A. LaRocca Bros.": final digit of "22-CC-185" is partly broken; 185 is the best reading. - Case No. column, row "Evans Cooperage Co.": final digit of "15-CC-163" is partly broken; 163 is the best reading. - Name of union column, row "Standard Fruit & Steamship Co.": a stray mark sits between "ILA," and "Locals" and another possibly after "Locals"; transcribed as "ILA, Locals 1422 and 1771", but a comma after "Locals" cannot be ruled out. - Name of union column, row "Evans Cooperage Co.": printed with a comma as "Steelworkers, Union", transcribed as printed even though the comma looks like a compositor's slip. - Name of complainant column, row "06-CC-292": images as "Brvan II Spaite & Son"; read as "Bryan H. Spaite & Son". Disposition columns: every non-X cell in Granted/Denied/Pending is either blank or filled with a dash rule, and all such cells are given as "". No row carries more than one X.

p. 199. This is a "—Continued" page, so the first two rows (01-CC-340, 11-CC-32) belong to a statutory-subsection section (apparently 8(b)(4)(A) or similar) whose heading was printed on the preceding page; no heading line for them appears on this crop. The italic centered lines 8(b)(4)(D), 8(b)(7)(A), 8(b)(7)(B), 8(b)(7)(C), 8(e), 8(b)(4)(A) & (B) and 8(b)(4)(B) & (D) are section lines carrying no values; they are placed in the stub column. Scan quality: the page is a degraded 1-bit scan in which terminal periods of abbreviations (Inc., Co., Bros., initials) are often indistinguishable from the leader dots that follow. I have transcribed them as the standard abbreviation periods they must be in the original; the leader dots themselves are dropped per instructions. Doubtful cell: row 09-CP-24 (Desrosiers Bros. Coal), "Name of union" column. The word before "17" is badly broken in the scan and could be read as "Distributors"; I transcribed it as "District 17^*" on the strength of the parallel entry "Mine Workers, District 19, et al^*" at row 10-CP-34, but the glyphs themselves are not clean. Other uncertain readings, all from scan degradation rather than ambiguity in the column assignment: "Wiggin Terminals, Inc." (row 1, complainant, could be "Wiggan"); "Bryan H. Spaite & Son" (middle initial is a blotted character); "Foor Engineering Co." (row 17-CP-22, complainant); "B. R. Schedell Contractor, Inc." (surname spelling). Stray ink artifacts, not transcribed as content: a mark before "Engineers" in the union cell of row 17-CP-22; a mark before "12" in the union cell of row 21-CC-583; small specks in the Denied column beside the last two rows and in the right margin of the footnote line. The last five rows each carry two case numbers printed on two lines in the stub (a CC number and a CD number); these are joined with a space into a single label, as a single table row. The footnote as printed is self-contradictory — it is itself flagged with an asterisk and states that unions are AFL-CIO affiliated "except those indicated by an asterisk". Transcribed as printed. Its trailing punctuation is not legible; no period is supplied. The right-hand column rule and the three disposition columns are fully within the crop; nothing appears cut off horizontally.

p. 200. Continuation page: the column headings are reprinted on this crop, so header_rows is filled. Six printed columns; the "Pending" column is empty throughout this crop. Section lines (the italic statutory-section labels "8(b)(4)(B) & 7(C)", "8(b)(4)(C) & 7(A)", "10(j)", "8(a)(1)(3)", "8(a)(1)(5)", "8(a)(1)(3) & (5)", "8(a)(1)(2)(3) & (5)", "8(b)(3)") are printed centered over the "Name of complainant" column rather than in the stub; they are placed in the stub cell here per the section-line rule, with their remaining cells empty. Two rows carry two case numbers on consecutive printed lines in the stub; they are joined into one cell: "10-CC-512 10-CP-31" and "05-CC-203 05-CP-22". Under the 8(a) sections the printed "Name of complainant" column holds the charging union (e.g. "Steel Workers", "Brewery Workers") and the "Name of union" column holds the employer (e.g. "Tiffany Tile Corp", "Gas Appliance Supply Corp et al"); this looks like a labelling inconsistency in the source, but each value is transcribed under the column it is printed in. "Textile Workers Union of America." is printed with a trailing period, kept as printed. The asterisk on "Insular Labor Organization (ILO)" is treated as the footnote marker for the AFL-CIO affiliation note. In the Granted column, rows 05-CA-2207 and 13-CA-5192 show only a dash rule, recorded as "". Scan quality is fair but dotted/degraded; the case numbers were legible, though the final digits of "05-CA-2207" and "13-CA-5192" are slightly broken.
