  1. 1 See table 1, footnote 1, for definitions of types of cases.

211 of 211 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 175. Structure: 11 printed columns — stub, then a five-column block "Number of unfair labor practice cases" (Total; Identification of complainant: AFL-CIO affiliates, Unaffiliated unions, Individuals, Employers) and a five-column block "Number of representation cases" (Total; Identification of petitioner: same four). "Total" is a tall heading spanning the 2nd and 3rd heading levels, so it is repeated in both. The stub has no printed heading. This is NOT a two-panel layout: there is a single stub column whose row labels (Pending July 1, 1962 / Received fiscal 1963 / On docket fiscal 1963 / Closed fiscal 1963 / Pending June 30, 1963) serve both halves at once, while the case type differs between halves. The three band rules inside the body ("CA cases 1" / "RC cases 1", "CB cases 1" / "RM cases 1", "CC cases 1" / "RD cases 1") are centred section headings spanning the five columns of their half, with an empty stub; following the spanning-heading rule, each label is repeated in each of the five columns it spans, and the stub cell is "". Typesetting: the ULP Total for "Received fiscal 1963" in the CA block is printed "9 550" with no visible comma (loose spacing) — transcribed 9,550; the CB block "Received fiscal 1963" Individuals cell is printed "2.053", the comma reading as a period — transcribed 2,053. In the RM block, "Pending July 1, 1962" AFL-CIO affiliates shows a stray dash-like speck after the 0 (prints as "0-"); it is dirt on the scan, not a character, so the cell is 0. A faint speck also sits in the gutter left of the RD "Closed fiscal 1963" Unaffiliated unions cell (7); it is not part of any value. Verification: every block reconciles. Within each block the four identification columns sum to Total; "Pending July 1, 1962" + "Received fiscal 1963" = "On docket fiscal 1963"; and "On docket" − "Closed" = "Pending June 30, 1963", for all ten columns of all three blocks. No printed figure appears to be a misprint. Crop: footnote marker 1 is attached to all six case-type band labels, but the footnote text itself falls below the bottom rule and is not on this image, so footnotes is empty. The caption (Table 1A) is excluded as instructed.

p. 176. This crop is a continuation page (printed page 163, running head "Appendix A"); no column headings are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The ruled grid is 11 columns wide: the stub, five columns of figures, a double vertical rule, then five further columns that are ruled across every band but printed entirely blank on this page — those are transcribed as empty cells. The three section bands ("CD cases", "CE cases", "CP cases", each with a raised 1) are centred over the five left-hand figure columns only and carry no values. The letters in the section labels are letterspaced in the original ("C D cases"); transcribed as CD/CE/CP. The five row labels repeat identically in each section. All figures are legible and internally consistent: in every section the second through fifth columns sum to the first, "Pending July 1, 1962" plus "Received fiscal 1963" equals "On docket fiscal 1963", and "On docket" minus "Closed" equals "Pending June 30, 1963", column by column.
