255 of 255 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 293. The crop shows the whole table; nothing is cut off. Seven columns: stub, then Total / AFL-CIO affiliates / Unaffiliated unions / In which no representative was chosen (all under the spanner "Number of elections"), then Eligible voters and Valid votes cast. Doubtful cells: - "Products of petroleum and coal", Valid votes cast: printed as "5 377" with no visible comma (the other four-digit-plus figures in the column all show one). Transcribed as "5,377"; the value is confirmed by the Manufacturing column total, which sums to the printed 373,016 only with 5,377. - "Tobacco manufacturers": transcribed as printed. The SIC major-group name is normally "Tobacco manufactures", so this may be a misprint, but the final "r" is legible here. - "Machinery (except electrical)": the "y" is broken in the scan and reads like a "v"; transcribed as "Machinery". Arithmetic check (not a correction, just a confidence check): every one of the six numeric columns reconciles. The 23 manufacturing detail lines sum to the printed Manufacturing row in all six columns (4,391 / 1,754 / 806 / 1,831 / 409,810 / 373,016); the four mining lines sum to the Mining row; the six transportation lines sum to the Transportation row; and the nine major divisions sum to the printed Total row (7,355 / 2,708 / 1,597 / 3,050 / 536,047 / 482,558). No printed total appears to be wrong. Section rows (Manufacturing, Mining, Transportation...) carry values here rather than being bare label lines, and are transcribed with their figures. The faint stray marks in the left margin beside "Paper and allied products" and in the stub beside "Agriculture, forestry, and fisheries" and "Wholesale trade" are scan artifacts, not footnote markers.
