Reader’s notes

p. 289. Ten columns: stub plus four under "Number of elections", four under "Number of employees involved (number eligible to vote)", and the tall "Total valid votes cast". The stub heading, the two "Total" sub-columns and "Total valid votes cast" are tall headings repeated down the header levels. Two cells are printed without their thousands comma (a dropped comma in the scan rather than a different number): the AFL-CIO row under "Number of employees involved ... AFL-CIO affiliates" reads "110 615", and the "AFL-CIO v. AFL-CIO" row under "Total valid votes cast" reads "35 242". I have written them as 110,615 and 35,242; both are confirmed by the column arithmetic (190,858 and 482,558 respectively). As a check, every one of the nine value columns sums from the six data rows exactly to the printed "Total" row, so the digits and their column placement are corroborated. Empty cells in the body are printed as dashed rules (AFL-CIO and "AFL-CIO v. AFL-CIO" in the two "Unaffiliated unions" columns; "Unaffiliated" and "Unaffiliated v. Unaffiliated" in the two "AFL-CIO affiliates" columns) and are transcribed as "". Punctuation judgments: the section label after the 1-union block prints with a faint mark that reads as a period in this scan; I transcribed it as "2-union elections:" to match "1-union elections:". Likewise the periods after "v." in the "AFL-CIO v. Unaffiliated" and "Unaffiliated v. Unaffiliated" labels are faint or lost in the scan; I rendered all three comparison labels with "v.". A stray tick mark sits just left of 7,355 in the Total row and is a scan artifact, not a footnote marker.
