  1. 1 The term "collective-bargaining election" is used to cover representation elections requested by a union or other candidate for employee representation or by the employer. This term is used to distinguish this type of election from a decertification election, which is one requested by employees seeking to revoke the representation rights of a union which is already certified or which is recognized by the employer without a Board certification.
  2. 2 Elections involving 2 unions of different affiliations are counted under each affiliation, but only once in the total. Therefore, the total is less than the sum of the figures of the 2 groupings by affiliation.

0 of 18 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 288. 11 columns, 3 heading levels. The scan is worn: decimal points in the percent columns are often reduced to a faint gap (e.g. the Total row prints as "58 5", "57 1", "90 0", "62. 1"); these are decimal points and are transcribed as 58.5, 57.1, 90.0, 62.1, likewise 53.6, 48.2, 53.0, 52.2. The raised 2 printed to the left of 7,355, 536,047 and 482,558 in the Total row is footnote marker 2, moved behind a caret. Per footnote 2 the Total row is deliberately less than the sum of the AFL-CIO and Unaffiliated rows (elections with 2 unions of different affiliations counted once in the total), so the apparent total mismatches are as printed and intended. Characters in the right-hand columns of the Unaffiliated row are degraded by ink spread; 196,535 and 102,509 are my best reading and are the cells most at risk. The period ending the first sentence of footnote 1 (after "by the employer") is not legible in the scan but is supplied as sentence punctuation.
