  1. 1 Sec. 8(a)(3) of the Act requires that, to revoke a union-shop provision, a majority of the employees eligible to vote must vote in favor of deauthorization.

24 of 24 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 288. The table has 15 columns: the stub plus 5 under "Number of polls" (Total; Resulting in deauthorization Number/Percent of total; Resulting in continued authorization Number/Percent of total), 5 under "Employees involved (number eligible to vote)" (Total eligible; the same two Number/Percent pairs), and 4 under "Valid votes cast" (Total; Percent of total eligible; Cast for deauthorization Number/Percent of total eligible). Decimal points: in this scan the decimal point in the percent cells is often faint or lost, so several print as e.g. "67 9", "32 1", "52 2", "47 8", "79 4", "53 7", "64 3", "35 7", "52 9", "84 5", "71 4", "28 6", "48 6", while others retain a visible point ("47.1", "54.1", "51.4", "73.8", "53.3"). All of these are one-decimal percentages and I have transcribed them with the decimal point. This is corroborated by the arithmetic: each Number/Percent pair sums to 100.0 (67.9+32.1, 52.2+47.8, 64.3+35.7, 52.9+47.1, 71.4+28.6, 51.4+48.6), and each percent matches its own ratio (1,911/2,407=79.4; 1,061/1,256=84.5; 850/1,151=73.8; 1,293/2,407=53.7; 679/1,256=54.1; 614/1,151=53.3). No misprints detected: 19+9=28, 9+5=14, 10+4=14; 1,256+1,151=2,407, 664+592=1,256, 592+559=1,151; 1,061+850=1,911; 679+614=1,293; and the AFL-CIO and Unaffiliated rows sum to the Total row throughout. The footnote marker 1 is attached to "Percent of total eligible" in the last column heading. A faint stray ink mark sits below "Percent of total" in the Employees-involved deauthorization column and another below the "Total" row rule near the Valid-votes-cast divider; both are scan artifacts, not footnote markers. The stub heading, the "Total"/"Total eligible" headings and the "Percent of total eligible" heading in the Valid-votes-cast group are tall single headings spanning the lower heading levels and are repeated accordingly.
