Reader’s notes

p. 274. Six printed columns: stub, Total, and the four "Identification of complainant or petitioner" columns. The stub has no printed heading, so cell 0 is empty in all three heading levels. Four section lines ("All cases^1", "Unfair labor practice cases", "Representation cases", "Union-shop deauthorization cases") are printed centred across the numeric columns as band headings; they are given here as label-only rows with empty value cells, and the five "Pending July 1, 1961 ... Pending June 30, 1962" rows repeat under each. Footnote markers: the raised "2" on the two "Pending July 1, 1961" totals (6,883 and 4,464) is printed to the LEFT of the number; per instruction it is written after the value as ^2. The raised "1" on the "All cases" band heading is written as All cases^1. In the All cases / Employers cell for "Pending July 1, 1961" there is a stray comma-like speck immediately before the digits (prints roughly as ",875"); the value is 875, consistent with the row sum 2,664+1,341+2,003+875 = 6,883. In the Union-shop deauthorization block the AFL-CIO affiliates, Unaffiliated unions and Employers cells hold dash rules (------), transcribed as "". All 20 data rows cross-foot exactly: each row's four component columns sum to its Total, and the three case-type blocks sum to the All cases block in every line. No misprints detected in the numbers. Footnote 1 is a single footnote whose text continues into the hanging list of case-type designations (CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CP, RC, RM, RD, UD); those lines carry no markers of their own, so they are joined into the one footnote string. Fine punctuation there is partly broken in the scan: several "sec" abbreviations show no period, "CB." reads "A charge of unfair practices" (the word "labor" is absent as printed), and the UD entry prints an unbalanced "sec (9(e)(1)". These are transcribed as they appear. The printer's signature line at the foot of the page ("662173—63——18") and the page number 259 are omitted, as are the appendix and table captions.
