Reader’s notes

p. 234. Structure: the table is one table printed as two stacked sections sharing the single set of column headings printed at the top ("Total", "By agreement of all parties", "By Board or court order"); the section banners "A BY EMPLOYERS^1" and "B BY UNIONS^4", and the inner banners "Cases" and "Workers" (which are centered over the three value columns rather than in the stub), are given as label-only rows with empty value cells. The "Cases"/"Workers" banners each appear twice, once in each section, as printed. In the scan the "A"/"B" of the two section banners may be followed by a period ("A. BY EMPLOYERS"); no period is clearly visible at this resolution, so none is transcribed. Doubtful cells: (1) "Workers offered reinstatement to job" — the Total reads 2,507 as printed, but the two component columns are 1,774 and 783, which sum to 2,557. Either the printed total is a misprint or the last digits of 2,507/1,774 are degraded in the scan; transcribed exactly as printed. Every other row in both sections adds correctly (e.g. 2,145 + 1,303 = 3,448; 140 + 111 = 251; $516,780 + $884,460 = $1,401,240; $52,120 + $55,540 = $107,660). (2) The thousands commas in "$516 780" and "$884 460" (row "Backpay awards", section A, last two columns) are not visible in the scan — they are almost certainly faded commas given the typesetting elsewhere in the table, and are transcribed as commas. (3) The footnote markers on 2,145 / 1,303 / 140 / 111 are printed as small raised digits to the left of each figure; they are reproduced after the value behind a caret.
